5 years ago (2002): Jeff Niepagen of Bloomington leads the 72nd Illinois State Amateur Golf Championship heading into today’s 36-hole finals at Wheaton. He shot 73-70—143 in the first two rounds for a two-stroke lead over Bloomington’s Andy Dustman, Jon Brackmann of Aurora and Mike O’Neal of Geneva.
15 years ago (1992): Kevin Weaver of Gibson City won his ninth late model stock car feature race as the season concluded at Farmer City Raceway. Snooky Dehm of Chatsworth captured the trophy dash.
25 years ago (1982): Mike Milligan eased to a four-under-par 66 at Highland Park to lead qualifying for the 63rd Bloomington-Normal Men’s City Match Play Championship. Ed Weaver and Bruce Patton shot 75s at the same golf course to share the qualifying medal in the first Senior Match Play Tournament.
50 years ago (1957): Mrs. Yontz Bonnett, four-time Women’s City golf champion, recorded a hole-in-one at Bloomington Country Club. Her ace came on the 125-yard, par three 12th hole. She won City titles in 1929, 1935, 1938 and 1948.
