Bloomington auction house under new owners

BLOOMINGTON -- A new voice will call out the shots at a downtown Bloomington auction house after the business changed owners earlier this month.

Tom Fiero bought the Bloomington Auction Gallery -- also previously known as Joy Luke Fine Arts Brokers & Auctioneers -- from Robert and Joy Luke on Aug. 1.

Fiero has a few ideas to grow the business, 300 E. Grove St., but largely will continue to conduct business as the Lukes had done for 30 years.

Robert Luke said he and his wife will continue to help Fiero -- and they'll also continue in their own appraisal business -- but they were ready to retire from the auction house.

"We've had a good run," Luke, 65, of Bloomington, said. "It's time that somebody else carries the banner, and we'll help him carry it."

Fiero is eager to learn about running an auction house after being an auction attendee since the late 1970s.

"I just love it," Fiero said.

But the Bloomington resident recognizes being an auctioneer is not his specialty. Fiero also is an emergency room doctor at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington.

He will rely on an experienced staff to help him learn the ropes.

Fiero is now busy preparing for his second auction at the gallery, a fine estate sale Aug. 31. In addition to playing the role of auctioneer on the night of an auction, Fiero also helps find and catalogue collections and advertise for auctions.

Now, people can place bids on the gallery's Web site up until 24 hours before an auction, but Fiero wants to consider the idea of hosting live online auctions. He'd also like to host more auctions, maybe as many as one every two weeks eventually.

"I just work all the time," Fiero said. "When I'm not sleeping, I'll be here or at St. Joe's."
