Fun in store this weekend in Flanagan
FLANAGAN — Flanagan Fest will kick off its second year this weekend, with a expanded schedule, a celebration of local history and a little funk thrown in. The Flanagan Fest will start Friday and continue until Monday with events ranging from various sporting activities and class reunions to the sounds of the Libido Funk Circus. This festival has a special meaning this year because it celebrates the village’s history. “This year we are going to be celebrating our 125th anniversary, and for the fest we are going to be doing the same things we did last year but we added more and made it into a three-day event,” village trustee Doug Carls said. “Last year went great and we had a good turnout.” Carls said new events include a co-ed softball tournament, barrel chain rides, a slide show depicting the history of Flanagan and activities for kids. Trustee Bev Friese said this is an opportunity for the residents of Flanagan to relax and have fun before school starts. “This is a gathering of friends and neighbors of Flanagan where we just get together and have a good time,” Friese said. “We have a lot of good things planned and I am just hoping the weatherman will cooperate.” The initial Flanagan Fest was just one day, and Friese said it rained through most of the morning. “I got drenched when I was walking, but we all just laughed and I said it was a wet T-shirt contest,” she said. “I am just hoping for some nice cool weather.” Some of the highlights of the upcoming fest include a five-kilometer race and two-mile fun/walk, which Friese said could attract up to 100 people, a car show, fireworks and the concert by Libido Funk Circus, a Chicago band that plays music from groups ranging from The Jackson Five to AC/DC. Friese said that she hopes this will give people the opportunity to come see Flanagan and experience what the town has to offer. “This is a great little town with lots of things going on, and we are proud of it,” she said. “We are definitely looking forward to having fun this weekend.” Festival fun What: Second annual Flanagan Fest When: Friday through Sunday Where: Downtown Flanagan Contact: For a full schedule of events and competition registration, go to www.flanaganfest.com.
