Olympia ready for start of school year

STANFORD -- Olympia School District is ready for the start of the new school year, which begins Aug. 21.

On Monday night, school board members toured portions of the main campus, including the middle school. Business and Operations Manager Andrew Wise led the tour, making note of the improvements in technology facilities and some rearranging of the elementary buildings since all-day kindergarten returns this year.

"Technology is a key component of the instructional program and is integrated into the curriculum through a wide-area network that connects the five separate attendance centers," Superintendent Brad Hutchison said. "With over 850 computers, students have access to computers and technology throughout the district. The district currently offers advanced placement high school courses to allow high-achieving students the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills."

Board member Trena Glenn was among a group of staff members who visited Pekin Community High School for an in-depth look at the technology curriculum. The administrative/education committee will continue to consider options to improve the district's program.

Also, Wise presented the board with the 2007-2008 tentative budget and announced the district may not receive as much revenue in the education fund as previously anticipated.

"This is due to a drop in equalized assessed valuation, the anticipated reduction of tax dollars as a result of the Hopedale Medical Complex exemption and the decline in state/federal funding," Wise said.

A 50-cent education tax increase approved by voters last spring will be applied to the 2008-2009 budget and the gap between anticipated revenue and expenditures will close substantially at that time, he added.

"All other fund revenues appear to remain stable," he said.

Building Olympia -- The board learned construction on the new Olympia North building will begin in the coming months. Earlier this summer, the board approved the construction of the new elementary school adjacent to the current Olympia North building in Danvers. It is expected to be completed by August 2009.

In association with the construction of the new building, Hutchison announced this year's theme for back-to-school activities is "Building Olympia." A special back-to-school institute day will be Monday (Aug. 20). More than two dozen teachers and education support personnel are beginning their first year with the district.

Mail-in registration -- This year, the district experimented with mail-in registration forms, alleviating the need for parents or students to appear at the school to register. Principals reported the procedure went well. Elementary orientation is set for 5:30 p.m. Aug. 30. Middle school orientation is set for 5:30 p.m. Aug. 29 and high school orientation is set to begin one hour later.

" I got a great education at Olympia; you get out of something whatever you put into it no matter where you are. In fact, my senior year we had a better ACT score and larger percentage of Illinois State Scholars than all B-N schools. It's not a bash at B-N schools, which also often get a bad rap in these comments, but simply a point that Oly is just as good a school as others in the area. I had a lot of dedicated, remarkable teachers that presented a lot of opportunities to me and my classmates. "

" and I'm more than happy to pay my taxes and have a fair share go to OLY. My niece and nephew participate a lot and are getting a great education and fantastic opportunities and I would gladly pay TWICE the taxes I do now for them to keep enjoying the quality they do. I graduated from OHS in the 80's and looking back, I now feel my education was high quality as well. We're getting one helluva fair shake if u ask me. "

" My assessed evaluation went up, not down. Now I am waiting for my taxes to go up as well. I'm sure Olympia will jump in with both feet now that they are not getting the "revenue they anticipated". As always with this school district: promises, promises!! Its so disheartening. "
