5 years ago (2002): Bloomington’s 24-year-old Todd Mitchell won the Illinois State Amateur title by firing rounds of 71-72 for a 291 total to edge Brian Anderson, an Illinois State golfer from Rochester, by one stroke. Bloomington’s Jeff Niepagen, who led after 36 and 54 holes, and Andy Dustman tied for 15th with 300.
15 years ago (1992): Professional boxer Francisco Arreola, visiting his parents’ home in Bloomington, has the World Boxing Council’s No. 8 ranking in the 122-pound division with a 27-1-2 record, including 12 wins by knockout. Arreola was born in Mexico but moved to Bloomington as a second grader. He now lives in Pensacola, Fla.
25 years ago (1982): After all the verbal needles had been inserted into Bob Metcalf’s hide, friends and family alike let the retiring University High coach and administrator know just how much they appreciated the positive ways he had touched their lives at a “roast” in Metcalf’s honor at the Bloomington Armory.
50 years ago (1957): Russell S. Proctor took a half-game lead in the Municipal League when Bob Beal limited the Merchants to three hits for an 8-0 rain-shortened victory. The score was 12-2 with two out in the Merchants’ half of the sixth when a brief shower ended the game and washed away that inning.
