Final injury test: Mordis done with ISU football
NORMAL – Perhaps out of habit, Dave Mordis took his place in formation for the stretching that typically ends an Illinois State football practice Wednesday evening at Hancock Stadium. Yet with the start of the season two weeks away in an Aug. 30 home game against Drake, ISU will have to find a replacement for Mordis’ spot in the Redbird offense. A fifth-year senior H-back, Mordis learned Wednesday that his season and ISU career is over. A magnetic resonance imaging test revealed a completely torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. “I was hoping for the best and expecting the worst,” said Mordis, who was injured in an intrasquad scrimmage last Saturday. “You don’t plan on hearing ACL. You don’t want to hear it. When you hear it, you’ve just got to take it and go forward. You never know when football is going to be over for you.” The 265-pound Mordis earned second team all-Gateway Conference honors at fullback in 2006 after catching 20 passes for 185 yards and one touchdown. He was part of the Gateway’s preseason team this season. “I’m just heartbroke for the kid. I got sick to my stomach when I heard,” ISU coach Denver Johnson said. “Dave is a great kid, a great contributor and a great leader. He was poised to have a great senior year. To have a guy lose his senior year like that so suddenly is a terrible thing. “It was such a nondescript thing on film. It didn’t look that bad. But they are not always horrific-type deals that result in this type of injury.” Mordis will help assistant coach Jim Williams with the team’s tight ends and H-backs. Walk-on Garin Harcar moves to first string at H-back in Mordis’ absence. The 5-foot-11, 260-pound Harcar caught three passes for 6 yards and two TDs last season. The new second string H-back is sophomore Bert Whigham with Casey Cline, a freshman walk-on from Gibson City, also in the mix. “It’s going to hurt us as a team. We’ll shift and adjust and overcome it as a team,” said Johnson. “We’re kind of thin there, but we’ll be OK.” Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports. |
