Milton says trial has been a financial, emotional burden

BLOOMINGTON — McLean County Clerk Peggy Ann Milton said Thursday that the experience of facing a trial on criminal charges has been devastating, both emotionally and financially.

“It’s been a devastating financial burden to my family. I’ve received some donations from friends and family which I’ve very grateful for,” Milton said after her one-hour appearance on the witness stand.

Milton looked directly at jurors as she answered questions from the state and defense.

“I was determined to speak the truth. I felt like the trial went fairly and all the evidence we needed was introduced. I think my attorney, Lee Smith, did a fantastic job. Now it’s up to the jury,” Milton told the Pantagraph.

Milton hugged her husband, Glenn Milton, after she left the witness stand. The county clerk said support from family and other supporters has helped her through a difficult process.

“It’s been exhausting. I’ve been so blessed by the support of family and friends. Without them I wouldn’t be able to put one foot in front of the other,” said Milton.

Special prosecutor David Rands has declined to talk about the case during the trial.

Law needs to change! wrote on Aug 18, 2007 2:44 PM:

" Would be nice if people like YODER would be obligated to have a face to face with not only the accusor but also the accused. When poor judgement is used by a State's Attorney like YODER (who happens to be up for reelection this time around - any takers out there? He's definitely beatable after this joke of a case.) bad things can happen to good people. "

" You talk like she is guilty. Your "what if's" have nothing to do with the facts. The facts remain that she didn't steal anything. The jury has spoken. You sound like a sore loser. Are you? "

" Now she should sue the county for what they did to her, it would serve them right for cutting her a break. "

" The difference is that if it was our own personal money from our home and it was our neighbor, the State's Attorney wouldn't have found it fit to take to trial! Would I want her arrestend and tried, absolutely, but more than likely, it would not happen over $400.00. Your point is a great one, though! "

Question wrote on Aug 17, 2007 10:34 AM:

" My question for all of you who think that this is so petty and not important or not criminal. What if she came in and stole 400 dollars from your home or your purse/wallet? And lets say for argument's sake that the evidence was there and the Grand Jury agreed and indicted. Let's say she is your neighbor and she did not think anything was wrong with "borrowing without asking". Would you still NOT want this to go to court? Would you still cry that you did not care? Would you care whether your tax dollars or your neighbors tax dollars were being used to take this to court? Get Real People! If it happened to you personally all of you would be the first to cry for an arrest and make her pay. You would not care about how embarrassing this was to her or if she ever found another job. Her poor feelings and future - I mean it was just 400 dollars of your hard earned money she stole. You do not get it! "

Still, a felony!? wrote on Aug 17, 2007 8:34 AM:

" Stamps are not worth slapping someone with a felony that will haunt them the rest of their lives. You can't even get another job when you have a felony on your record. It's so petty. I hope that the jury says she's not guilty, even if she is. "

" Did you know there is actually a Starbucks on the first floor of the county court house!!! Yeah, I'll take a latte grande with my stupidly expensive, and Stupid, misconduct charges, please. The doofus mentality of this county is staggering really. Barney and Andy are getting smeared when they're compared to this comedy show. I mean who takes people to jail for licking 100 stamps and putting them on --county approved, mind you-- Diabetes Foundation letters? "

Pay the Bill, Bill! wrote on Aug 17, 2007 6:30 AM:

" Let's just add up the total for Stamp-gate. Trial was $80,000. Reimbursing Mrs. Milton for her legal expenses $60,000. Paying restitution to Mrs. Milton after she sues the County for $20 million for malicious prosecution. Plus damages for pain and suffering. Total cost, oh, somewhere north of $26 MILLION dollars. I say make Mr. Yoder pick up this check. The taxpayers can't afford to foot the bill for Bill's political hit jobs, doncha think? "

What an act wrote on Aug 17, 2007 2:49 AM:

" Yea, she solicited donations to her defense fund from most of the county clerks in the state. Thankfully, I know several that were smart enough not to get involved. They know that using county stamps and employee's paid time are not for their personal use. "

Justice and fairness demands wrote on Aug 16, 2007 10:26 PM:

" Let us assume, for the sake of making a point, Mrs. Milton is guilty on all charges. Justice and fairness demands that everyone who has used stamps for personal reasons should be in the dock and forced to go through the embarassment and humiliation Mrs. Milton is being forced to endure. Alas, since when is life fair? "
