Man arrested in stabbing near downtown Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON — A 23-year-old man was accused of attacking a 20-year-old man with knife early Thursday east of downtown, police said.

Robert Poore, 20, of the 900 block of West Front Street, suffered cuts to his back and the back of his head in the attack about 12:45 a.m. in the 500 block of East Monroe Street, said Bloomington police spokesman Duane Moss. He was taken to BroMenn Regional Medical Center, where no information on his condition was available.

Moore told officers he was walking west toward McLean Street when someone attacked him from behind, Moss said. The attacker left without being seen, and Moore walked to his original destination, a home in the 300 block of North McLean Street, Moss said.

Once inside the house, the 20-year-old collapsed, Moss said.

The 23-year-old now accused in the attack was inside the same house when officers arrived, and he raised his voice and became agitated in telling officers to help his “cousin,” Moss said.

The 23-year-old lives next door to the house where the 20-year-old collapsed, and Moss said he did not know if the two men really were related.

Detectives interviewed people, including the 23-year-old, at the Bloomington Police Department. He was arrested about 4:10 a.m. and jailed about 11:15 a.m., Moss said.

Formal charges were not filed against the 23-year-old on Thursday.

" I am from Chicago and moved to Bloomington to raise my children...at that time it was a grat place to be you could sleep with your door open...Now with the drugs on the streets and I guess that came from Chicago to (NOT) it's all over............so anywhere might be ruff to be at nowdays...........Bloomington should not be so GREEDY for money being one of the richest countys so with money being the root of all evil... some things should be left where it lays.east side west it's crime all over. " I don't think that the juvenile delinquent behavior is just on the west side. I drove down Prospect the other day and the gang acitivity is bad over there. The Arbors is very bad. And guess what happened? A lot of the displaced subsidized housing people from Chicago moved in there. I heard Chicago gave BN $$ to take these people. I'd give them the $$ back and send the criminals back with them. It just makes me sick to see how these people rob and kill people for $$, or sick pleasure. While you have hard working people paying for them to be on welfare. I say take the criminals and send them to Iraq and bring home our innocent soldiers!!! We wouldn't have to worry about overcrowded prisons. And we wouldn't have to worry about feeding and housing these low lifes. "

" You know I live between Main St and Veterans Parkway. It use to be that this was a nice older neighborhood and now the west side is smearing over further. I don't think that Main street divides East and West it is much more like Veterans Parkway. Then again, you have random streets like Rainbow and Clearwater to deal with. by the way, did you all see the gang grafitti on Hershey the other day across from the YMCA. The trash is everywhere! "

" I used to live in that block of Monroe St. and was involved in a stabbing a few years ago in that very same block. But the 2 guys who did it were not from Chicago- one lived next door, the other from Danville. And it happened late at night too.History repeats itself ! Glad I'm out of there. "

" I am in my fifties and this comparison was going on when I was a kid, I thought it was strange even then. But back then, you didn't see black people on the east side unless they were domestics, we didn't have one, but my friend did, and she was mean to us kids. But now, anyone can go anywhere, if you don't like it, there is always vigilante justice, that's what I do. "

" I have lived in a neighborhood on the far east side for 8 years. There has been a decline in recent years, and it is not related to any specific race. We have had "tagging" on our street light, there is a house on Clearwater that has some very suspicious things going on, including cars parked on the lawn and people coming and going at all hours. On Royal Point there is a house that soon will have rats the way these people keep their property, they moved here from the Chicago Area but they are not African American! "

I have since obtained a Bachelor's of Science Degree from ISU in Computer Science, and start my Master's of Science Degree on monday in Art's Technology. Did I mention I also work for the IT Department @ State Farm? Your stereotypes are simply HORRIFIC. Tell me to go back to Chicago then! "

" I am OUTRAGED at the ignorance in your posts. As another poster stated I am a 25 y/o educated, professional, who owns my own home on the west side. In what you may consider one of the "worst" neighborhoods and I walk my dog anywhere from 9:30 pm to 2 pm everynight w/out incident. I am sorry for the guy who suffered this attack, but Like I said I've been doing it for awhile now w/out incident. Yet when I rented an apartment on the East side, next to a "State Farm" neighborhood, I was robbed. Before you jump to conclusions, why don't you take a walk on the "wild" side? "

" I dont appreciate the comment that was made about everytime a story about violence comes out, that its because of someone being "implanted" here from Chicago. I take offense to that. I am from Chicago and I am damn proud of it. You cant just assume that the poeple are all from Chicago. "

" Are you people for real (East Sider, especially No Doubt and declining east side neighborhood)????!!! I live on the west side, am educated, own my own home, have a professional job and am not on welfare. There are many of us that live in these older neighborhoods because we refuse to live in a cookie cutter house in a cookie cutter neighborhood. I know my neighbors and actually enjoy living here. Keep your nasty comments to yourself unless you know what you are talking about. You don't live here so you can't comment. "

" This neighborhood is on the rebound and those of us who care about it are making it better every day. If you were to take a drive through you would see some of what you expect, but a lot of what you wouldn't. There are some well maintained homes with young professionals drawn to the ease of life in downtown and the close proximity to everything Bloomington has to offer. I may not live in Hawthorne Hills but I don't sit in gridlock on Veterans twice a day either! "

to declining east side wrote on Aug 17, 2007 2:00 PM:

" I actually live on Monroe very near the intersection of Monroe and McLean and I couldn't disagree more. This was the first violent activity that has taken place on our street almost all summer. I remember a few years ago when the police were here breaking up fights almost every night. Overall I have noticed apartment owners taking a much greater interest in maintaining their properties plus a marked decrease in liter, crime, vandalism and general vagrancy over the last year and a half and am proud to be part of a neighborhood which is slowly but surely taking its self back. Yes, we still have a long way to go but the individual actions of a few do not make the entire street a bad place to live. Being poor doesn't make you a criminal although it is true criminals often are poor and uneducated which is why they turn to crime in the first place. If a hundred people live on a street and 2 happen to get drunk and act like idiots why vilify the entire community? "

" from this kind of crime is MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than wasting money on a trial over a few postage stamps, but I would bet this guy will get off easier than Ms. Melton will. Hopefully, his bond will be set HIGHER than what we have been reading about the afore-mentioned lady. Let's get the priorities straight in this country again. I pray the young man who was victimized will get some justice in the end. No one has the right to attack another individual no matter where they are or where they are from. "

" I think we can all agree that any stabbing, shooting, murder investigation, or all other crime that happens on the west side, happened by sombody that has been implanted from chicago to bloomington. i remeber the good old days when crime was not a topic of conversation for these towns. Thank you west side. Long live the east side!!! "

" Never say never when referencing stabbings in Hawthorne Hills. It could happen. Look at David Henricks. But you're right. You don't see that happening on a daily, weekly or even yearly basis. It's due to the lack of education in the people on the west side. When you're not education, don't work and wait around for welfare, then you tend to get bored and create your own sick entertainment. Lack of education and goals is a personal choice. People need to get a grip on reality and start contributing to society rather than be a detriment to society. I say a lot of this crime is from the people from Chicago. They don't like to be stereotyped by yet they continue being a menace to our community. "
