BLOOMINGTON — Firefighters extinguished a large bonfire after partygoers lost control of the blaze Friday night just north of West Market Street.

Flames from the fire behind All Brite Sign Co., 908 White Oak Road, reached 15 to 20 feet high and could be seen from Market Street by 8:30 p.m. Smoke could be seen from downtown.

The fire was started in a grassy field as part of a celebration for some students about to start their freshman year of college, said Assistant Fire Chief Nick Isaacs.

There were no injuries in the fire, which extinguished by shortly after 9 p.m., he said.

" I jsut so happend to be there, oh and guess what? It wasnt a big deal. It was some freshman in HIGH SCHOOL standing around, being bored, playing some football. There was a hay rack ride driven by one of the girls dads. So, beofer you jump to some conclusions I think all o fyou should learn the facts. They are some good kids, no drugs, and who honestly cares if it was on the west or east side. Because, pretty much all the people there LIVE on the EAST side.....wow get a LIFE!!! "

" Why can't people just grow up? The smoking ban is in place so live with it and move on. Life is too short to be so negative. At least you realize how stupid your own comments are by stating: "Just the truths of the stupidity in this community". Relating your swallow comments on smoking ban to this story does show stupidity. "

jipsi, on college students...not? wrote on Aug 18, 2007 12:47 PM:

" I remember attending a few "parties" (they were family & friend barbeques/hog roasts, actually) behind that particular business, most recent one was about 8 years ago, though. And it was NOT a party-party, but just long time friends/adults getting together over a keg or two, a local band, more of a cook-out than anything else. If I'm not mistaken, this article's said "party" may well have been along the same lines. A bonfire/cookout grill CAN get out of control, whether at a family gathering or a college party, and the article here states neither. Wait until the facts are in, before reflexively condemning West side, college students, partiers, etc. Also, there ARE areas on the edge of town (ALL sides) that aren't covered by the CITY burning laws. I think East side people here have WAY too much time and imagination on their hands. Kudos to the city fire department/firefighters for putting the fire out, saving neighboring homes from harm. "

College Student that (gasp) LIVES on the west side wrote on Aug 18, 2007 12:32 PM:

" to "to party people"... You are pretty wrong. See, there is this thing called free will, and it turns out college students can go WHEREVER they want. This has nothing to do with college/non-college students, or east/west residents. It has to do with a FIRE, people. Get over yourselves. "

" Am I not right in thinking that burning anything inside the city limits is a ticketable offense? So did anybody get a ticket? Was anybody injured? There are stupid people enough all over town that would do something like this, let alone college students. And I would think if this was a college student issue, which it doesn't mention in the article, why would they go to West Market Street to party? All the article says is partygoers. Drinking party, drug party, hazing party, we don't know. Maybe some idiot thinks there should be a Bloomington wild fire to compete with all the others in other states. Thank God the fire department got it contained. "

TO EAST SIDE wrote on Aug 18, 2007 9:54 AM:

" Ya know that I read these entries every day on multiple stories posted by the Pantagraph. And I dont care if it is about flowers, food, robbery or just a good hearted story.... there is always one in every crowd that has to put the "West" or "East" side spin on it. Who cares if it was East or West? It's about a bon fire out of control. You know I am pretty sure that I live in Bloomington - Normal. Not west Bloomington or East Bloomington. Just plain ole' Bloomington IL. I wish that you would just get off of your high horse and stop judging for a minute and read the story for what it is about .... Because one day it might be a "West" side Bloomington resident that could be saving you life in a hospital, interviewing you for a job, or leading you a helping hand when you need the most.... Thank You! "

" Ummm, it wasn't 'college' students....this party was thrown by the parents of kids entering (9th grade) High School. My son attended this bon fire, and when I picked him up at 11pm...no one told me ANYTHING. If the parents who threw this party are reading this, please understand that it is YOUR responsibility to let the other parents know what went on!! I was shocked to have read it on the front page of the Pantagraph! I too am extremely glad no one was injured!!! I'm curious if any citations issued? "

A very short story wrote on Aug 18, 2007 8:01 AM:

" The comments already posted show this was a very short story. It just seems like someone heard about it and wrote it down without investigating. Is open burning a crime? Will anyone be charged? who was involved. What kind of celebration? The who, what, where, when, and why do not seem to have been completed on this story. "

" In a subdivision approximately 20 miles west of B/N we have people who frequently burn bonfires long into the night. Very dry and a lot of timber and scrub. Complaints made but no one seems to care. When this gets out of hand you could see dozens if not more houses go. Illinois burn laws are strict but no one enforces them. "
