By Pantagraph staff
NORMAL -- Illinois State senior linebacker Kye Stewart has been selected to the Sports Network Preseason All-America first team for the Football Championship Subdivision.
A native of Nashville, Tenn., Stewart was among three Gateway players named to the first team, joining Northern Iowa offensive lineman Chad Rinehart and Youngstown State defensive tackle Mychal Savage.
The Gateway Conference had nine players recognized with Northern Iowa defensive tackle Mark Huygens, Youngstown State offensive guard Brad Samsa and Southern Illinois return specialist Craig Turner receiving second-team honors.
Northern Iowa safety Chris Parsons and tight end Louis Irizarry and linebacker James Terry of Youngstown State were third-team selections.
Stewart earned first-team all-league honors in 2006, after collecting 126 tackles in 12 games. He led the Redbirds with 11 tackles for loss, while earning Gateway Player of the Week honors twice.
