5 years ago (2002): Bloomington radio station WJBC hired John Fitzgerald as its new sports director and play-by-play voice of the Illinois State football and basketball teams. Fitzgerald, who replaces Mark Johnson, spent the past two years as the men’s basketball radio and television play-by-play man for Loyola University in Chicago.
15 years ago (1992): Tom Kearfott shot a 1-over-par 72 at Bloomington Country Club for a 218 total to win the Bloomington-Normal Medal Play Golf Tournament by four shots over second-place Dave Coffman. Kearfott also won in 1988 before becoming a professional for three years.
25 years ago (1982): Marietta, Ga., scored three runs in the first inning off Beich’s Bobcat pitcher Mick Freed and went on to defeat the Bloomington team, 5-1, in the championship game of the Thorobred League Baseball World Series at Salt Lake City.
50 years ago (1957): Moose Lodge pitcher Bob Flanagan, who did not yield a hit or run in his last appearance against league-leading Proctors, almost had another shutout in shading Legion hurler Jack Chick, 3-1, in the Municipal League.
