Champion Sioux Falls' run the talk of the UIF
BLOOMINGTON — Billings Outlaws coach Heron O’Neal admitted that lining up against the Sioux Falls Storm had his “players’ attention.” “You want to be the one that’s known for stopping that streak,” he said. The search still continues. Heading into Saturday’s Casey’s All-Star Classic at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum, Sioux Falls carried an unfathomable 38-game winning streak. During the last three seasons, the Storm has not lost a single game and won each United Bowl. “I think it’s definitely tough (beating them). They got a great team,” said O’Neal, who will coach the Western Conference. “They play well together. They’ve had their team together for at least four or five years as well. … It’s not easy (beating them).” This past season, Sioux Falls won its games by an average of 23.7 points and had only three of its 18 games decided by fewer than 10 points. “We took it one game at a time,” said quarterback Terrance Bryant. “We didn’t look at is as a 38-game winning streak or a five-game win streak.” The streak is currently the longest in professional football. Sioux Falls is only the second team since the National Football League and American Football League merged in 1970 to go undefeated through the regular season and win a championship. The Miami Dolphins accomplished that feat in 1972, but only did it in one season. The Storm has done it in three consecutive seasons. “It’s very neat,” Storm linebacker Mark Blackburn said. “It’s just great to be mentioned with all those teams. I feel privileged to be on the Storm and most of our guys do, too.” Possible expansion? UIF executive director/commissioner Dakota Crow said the Wichita Wild is “basically in” the league for next year and possible expansion may also be on the horizon as the Evansville BlueCats ceased operations last week. “We have a handful who are actually calling us now,” Crow said Thursday. “Not to say that we’ll take everybody or will solidify all of them. But we’re talking to people. This is the time of year that happens.” Crow would not disclose which cities were interested in joining the league, but admitted the UIF will not expand “just to expand.” “But I think that everybody wants to expand,” Crow said. “We’d like to see that growth because you kind of like to know somebody’s interested in you. We’re looking at quality teams and this weekend’s a big part of our maturing process.” Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports. |
