If you’re wild about walleyes, head to Lake Erie
Walleyes in Lake Erie usually move east toward places to find deeper, cooler water during the hot months. But, you couldn’t convince the Bishop clan of the Twin Cities of that. In one six-hour adventure last week, Brad, Adam, Tyler and Will Bishop and friend Mike Curtis boated 100 pounds of walleyes fishing at the “Walleye Capital of the World” with Capt. Pete Scheid of Captain Hook Charters in Sandusky, Ohio. Brad Bishop estimated the group caught fish weighing at least 300 pounds counting sheephead and other rough fish. “We were surprised,” said Bishop, who didn’t have high hopes for the outing at the start. Scheid led them north of Pelee Island in Canadian waters, where they drifted over 35 feet of water using spinnerbaits tipped with night crawlers. “On still days, trolling with planner boards is an option,” Brad Bishop said. They had to purchase a one-day Canadian fishing license for $18 each to make the trip. Back on shore, they had a professional fish cleaning service fillet the walleyes for 65 cents a pound. Part of the catch was taken immediately to a restaurant that collected $10 a plate to cook the fresh fish one of four ways. (There’s another way to cook walleye besides deep frying? Imagine that!) Visit www.capthook.com for more information. In case you missed it in Thursday’s Hook, Line & Sinker, Lake Erie also was good to two bass fishing teams from Bloomington-Normal competing last week in the Illinois Bass Federation Nation Regional at Sandusky. Mackinaw Valley Bassmasters finished second. Team members included David Thompson, Bobby Evans, Brian Koch, Dave Fritts, Thomas Kaufman and Eric Varner. The Bloomington Normal Bassmasters finished sixth. Members were Jamie Maisenbacher, A.J. Menssen, Scott Bree, A. J. Bailey, Mark Dyer and Andy Menssen.
