Rotary clubs team up for fundraiser
MACKINAW — The four Rotary clubs in Bloomington-Normal will join forces for the first time to offer a community fundraising event in Mackinaw. The Bloomington Rotary, Normal Rotary, Bloomington-Normal Sunrise Rotary and Bloomington-Normal Sunset Rotary clubs will host the Rotary Race at 4 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Mackinaw Valley Vineyard on Illinois 9 in Mackinaw. The event will include a 5K run, one-mile and two-mile walks and a kids run and games. The four clubs have combined to raise money before, but this outing marks the first time the individual groups have sponsored an activity for the public, said Tom O’Connor, event chairman and past president of the Bloomington Rotary Club. “This event, especially out at the winery, it just seemed like it would be a fun thing to do,” O’Connor said. A portion of the adult run and the children’s course will pass through the rows of grapes in the vineyard, said Dave Hawkinson, a member of the Bloomington Rotary Club who’s in charge of the kids’ events. Games for kids include ring toss, bean bag toss and hula hoops, he said. “It’s going to be a grape time,” quipped Hawkinson. The purpose of the joint effort is multifaceted. Twin City Rotary members wanted to organize an activity for people of all ages that also would promote the Rotary organization in the community and support a good cause, O’Connor said. The Rotary Race will raise money for The Rotary Foundation, an international foundation involved in numerous service and relief projects, such as the eradication of polio worldwide. While an overwhelming portion of the foundation money is used in underdeveloped countries, some of the money could be distributed locally for community service projects, O’Connor said. The entry fee for the weekend’s run-walk is $25 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger. For an application, contact O’Connor at toc1370@aol.com. Participants also can register from 3 to 4:15 p.m. the day of the race. Rotary is an international volunteer organization that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards and helps build goodwill in the world. About 1.2 million Rotarians are members of more than 32,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. About 300 people are members of the four Rotary clubs in Bloomington-Normal.
