AWARDSPATH accreditation NORMAL — PATH Inc. has been awarded accreditation for five years by the American Association of Suicidology, the standard-setting organization for crisis services. PATH (Providing Access to Help) is one of 141 accredited, 24-hour crisis response organizations in the United States and Canada. Accreditation signifies that an organization has been evaluated during a site survey by an AAS examiner, and has met or exceeded specific standards in the following areas: administration, training, general service delivery, services in life-threatening crisis, ethical issues, community integration and program evaluation. New PracticeOpens practice NORMAL — Dr. Jay-James Miller, a Normal native, has returned to Central Illinois to start Miller Urogynecology, a private medical practice. A son of Sherri Miller of Normal and the late Bob Miller, Miller received his bachelor of arts degree at Illinois Wesleyan University and his medical doctorate at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. He took his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria and completed a board-approved three-year fellowship in female pelvic medicine and reconstruction surgery at Northwestern University’s Evanston Continence Center June 30. He received a master of science in clinical investigation from Northwestern University School of Medicine. ANNOUNCEMENTSJoins practice BLOOMINGTON — Dr. Michael Manoles has left Minneapolis, Minn., and his position of 20 years as cardiologist with Cardiovascular Consultants Ltd. to accept a new cardiologist position with HeartCare Midwest at 1505 Eastland Drive, Suite 110, Bloomington. A graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., in biology and Spanish, Manoles earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota. Manoles served his residency at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, followed by his fellowship in cardiology at the University of Minnesota. Manoles is board certified in interventional cardiology, cardiovascular disease and internal medicine. He is also a fellow in the American College of Cardiology and a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners. Golf outing BLOOMINGTON — The Central Illinois Memorial Kidney Fund will host its 17th annual golf outing beginning at noon Aug. 15 at Pine Lakes Country Club in Washington. All of the money raised supports kidney dialysis patients throughout Central Illinois including many in the Bloomington-Normal area. Hospital donation LINCOLN — As part of their first “Great Place That Gives” campaign, employees at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital have donated more than 500 pounds of food and personal hygiene items to the Logan County Food Pantry. Additional items were donated by employees of Family Medical Center and Lincoln HealthCare Specialists. Wellness clinics PONTIAC — Livingston County Health Department is taking appointments for wellness clinics on Aug. 14 and 28 at the health department. The clinic is open to all adults in Livingston County. Basic wellness clinic services include blood pressure screening, metabolic syndrome screening and a blood chemistry profile. The $30 cost includes all lab fees. Additional services available through the wellness clinic include PSA (prostate specific antigen) prostate cancer testing for men, thyroid screening and HbA1c screening for clients with diabetes. New treatment STREATOR — Dr. John Speca, board certified orthopaedic surgeon of Peak Orthopaedic and Sports Care, is offering an option for the diagnosis and treatment of concussions, the ImPACT concussion management program. The ImPACT test is a computer program that Speca can administer to determine if a patient has a concussion and when that patient has fully recovered from the effects. This same program now is used by teams in the National Football League and Major League Baseball. Completes training NORMAL — Dr. Cathy Schimelpfenig of Back To Health, Normal, has completed Module 1 of Graston Technique, a new examination and treatment procedure for the management of musculoskeletal complaints. Graston was developed to aid in the treatment of patients who are experiencing pain and loss of function as a result of injury, cumulative stress disorders and following some surgical procedures. The procedure is currently being used by many university athletic and professional sports teams in the treatment and prevention of athletic injuries and is also used in the management of work-related injuries. The technique enables the doctor to effectively break down adhesions and scar tissue that forms between muscle fibers. The technique makes use of scientifically designed stainless steel instruments that detect and treat tissue restrictions that result in pain and dysfunction. Residency grads NORMAL — BroMenn Healthcare’s graduate medical education program recently graduated its fifth class of residents with a dinner and ceremony in BroMenn Regional Medical Center Conference Center. William F. Beringer, D.O., and Gregory A. Howes, D.O., graduated from the neurosurgery residency program, completing their sixth post-grad year. Beringer will relocate to Oklahoma to begin his practice in neurosurgery. Howes was accepted to a fellowship program at Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, Calif. BroMenn’s neurosurgery residency program began in July 2002 and was the community’s first postgraduate medical residency program. It is conducted in partnership with the Central Illinois Neuroscience Foundation, the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Midwestern University and the Osteopathic Post-Doctoral Training Institute. Dr. Keith Kattner is the program director. In addition to the residency graduates, six interns were awarded certificates of completion. Drs. Eric Fouliard, Adrian Harvey, Stacey Phan, Andrea Terry, Jason Waddell and Christopher Waguespack will continue their training with residencies at BroMenn Healthcare Six new doctors from throughout the country have recently come to BroMenn Healthcare to complete their internships. Drs. Seth Malloy and John Soliman will work in BroMenn’s neurosurgery residency. Drs. Jennifer Hendrix and Trevor Martin will work in BroMenn’s family medicine residency. Drs. Umair Athar and Philip Moore will be general rotating interns. All interns will practice in BroMenn’s Family Health Care Clinic located in the Physician Office Building on the BroMenn campus. |
