East beats West 49-25 UIF All-Star game
BLOOMINGTON -- In a season filled with exceptional play, Bloomington Extreme quarterback capped his second year in United Indoor Football with the All-Star Classic most valuable player award Saturday night. | Photo gallery Burk finished with three total touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) in the Eastern Conference’s 49-25 victory over the Western Conference at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum. The Extreme quarterback dazzled the hometown crowd by completing six of seven passes for 61 yards and two touchdowns. His only incompletion was an interception in the third quarter. He also rushed three times for 10 yards. “There were so many good athletes around me. I’m not sure that I was as deserving as some of the other guys,” Burk said. The East blitzed to a 29-6 halftime lead behind a balanced offense and opportunistic defense. The offense compiled 139 total yards (93 passing and 46 rushing) and committed no turnovers. Burk completed all four passes he attempted for 31 yards and one touchdown and also ran for another. Burk’s teammate, James Walton, caught the 11-yard touchdown despite being knocked over the wall by a defender. “I felt comfortable back there,” Burk said. Rock River quarterback Ben Sankey completed three of six passes for 62 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown strike to Lexington receiver Harry Lewis, who beat his defender with a streak pattern. Lexington tailback Rayshawn Askew also scored on a two-yard run and Rock River kicker Doug Daniel opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal. The defense limited the West to 87 first-half yards and picked off three passes. The only touchdown by the West was on its first possession when Chris Dixon connected with Billings receiver Johnny Ostermeyer on a 27-yard touchdown pass. Colorado kicker Deric Yaussi missed the extra-point kick. The West’s final five possessions of the half ended in three interceptions and two by missed field goals from Yaussi. “I’m really pleased with our defense,” Eastern Conference coach Ted Schmitz said. “It was a lot of fun.” The teams combined to commit 16 penalties for 86 yards in the first half. All told, there were 24 penalties for 126 yards. A 2-yard touchdown pass from Sioux Falls quarterback Terrance Bryant to teammate Leon Hall, Jr. on the opening series of the second half cut the West deficit to 29-12. On the East’s ensuing possession, Burk had a pass intercepted by Sioux Falls defensive back Justin Landis. The West needed only six plays to march 29 yards when Sioux Falls’ running back Marques Smith hit paydirt for a one-yard touchdown pass to make it 29-19. Burk found his passing form on the East’s next series when he completed two passes, including a 21-yard TD strike to Demetrius Wilbert, to push the lead to 35-19. The West had an opportunity to trim the lead early in the fourth quarter, but it failed to convert a fourth-down chance, enabling the East to take over on the West 16. An Askew eight-yard touchdown run culminated the two-play drive to extend the lead to 42-19. The East culminated its scoring when Sankey connected on a two-yard touchdown pass to Ohio Valley receiver Willie Austin late in the fourth quarter. Smith finished the scoring when he caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Bryant. Askew led all rushers with 56 yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns. Sankey completed 7 of 12 passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns. The East finished with 241 total yards, 16 more than the West. Ostermeyer led all receivers with eight receptions for 79 yards and one touchdown. Bryant finished with 107 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Dixon had 77 yards passing and a touchdown. The West (18) had two more first downs, but only converted one-of-eight third-down opportunities. Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports. |
