5 years ago (2002): The Illinois State women’s soccer team, regular-season Missouri Valley Conference champions a year ago, were picked to finish first again by Valley coaches in a preseason poll. The Redbirds finished with a record of 13-5 last year.
15 years ago (1992): The Bloomington Hearts unleashed a 14-hit attack for a 9-5 victory over the Summerside 94s of Prince Edward Island, Canada, in a losers bracket contest at the International Softball Congress World Tournament in Salt Lake City. Steve King drove in five runs with two singles and a three-run home run.
25 years ago (1982): Defending champion Joe Thompson relied on some superb chipping and putting to advance to the quarterfinals of the Bloomington-Normal Men’s City Match Play golf tournament by ousting Dan Littell, 5 and 4, at Highland Park.
50 years ago (1957): Carlock tied the game with two runs in the seventh inning and added two more in the 12th to edge Sibley, 4-2, for the ASA Class B Sectional softball crown at O’Neil Park. Loren Schwartz stifled Sibley on three hits in the first game and four in the nightcap to both games of the doubleheader, 1-0 and 4-2.
