Clinton lays lumber to Chiefs
By Pantagraph staff
The Peoria Chiefs suffered their fourth straight loss with a 13-4 drubbing at the hands of the Clinton LumberKings in Midwest League play Sunday at O’Brien Field in Peoria.
Clinton broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the fourth before tacking on another five runs in the fifth to chase Peoria starter Michael Bartek. Bartek (0-1) surrendered eight runs on eight hits, striking out two and walking one before his departure.
Peoria rallied briefly with four runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by Nate Samson’s two-run triple, to make it a 9-4 game, but they would come no closer. Clinton left no doubt by scoring four more times in the ninth inning off relievers Matt Maradeo and Alex Maestri.
The loss shrinks the Chiefs wild card lead to just one game over Cedar Rapids, which swept a doubleheader from Wisconsin on Sunday.
