5 years ago (2002): The Evergreen Racquet Club women’s 4.5 level tennis team won the U.S. Tennis Association/Midwest USA League Sectional in Indianapolis to qualify for the Oct. 18-20 national tournament at San Diego. The Evergreen squad posted sectional victories over teams from Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Ohio.
15 years ago (1992): Mariel Verban of Bloomington won two matches and lost another in the United States Tennis Association’s National Challenge Cup at Boca Raton, Fla. She is competing in the Girls 12 age division.
25 years ago (1982): Flanagan’s Gary Eden led from start to finish in winning the six-cylinder 40-lap feature race at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway. Tom Myers of Forrest won the semi-feature for super stocks at the Farmer City Raceway but Jim Leka of Illiopolis took the feature event.
50 years ago (1957): The Merchants added another chapter to the Municipal League’s current best seller, “The Decline and Fall of the Defending Champion Moose,” with a 9-3 victory. Everett Lockenvitz, wild enough to grey the hair of young manager Wayne Patkunas, stopped the Moose on two hits and clubbed a home run and double himself.
