The report of a man attempting to kidnap a young girl in Bloomington turned out to be false, Bloomington police said Friday afternoon.

A caller claimed the incident happened on East Washington Street about 1 p.m. Friday, but police said the call turned out to be unfounded.

However, information on the initial call ended up in various places, including the Normal-based Unit 5 school district. An initial e-mail went to 50 members of the district’s administrative team to inform staff, faculty, parents and students as needed, Unit 5 Superintendent Gary Niehaus said.

He was not aware it was a false report until late Friday afternoon.

Normal and McLean County sheriff’s police had no reports of any abductions or attempts.

False reports no joke! wrote on Aug 25, 2007 2:02 PM:

" Parents really need to work with their children and help them understand it is not a game to tell these types of stories. It is a terrible thing when children olay pranks, and do not realize the detriment of it in the event of an actual emergency. We can probably all relate to the silly antics in our childhood, but life's threatening situations are more vicious than some of the occurences of days gone by. Let us continue to lift our communities in prayer and teach our youth wrong from right. "

" If this report was made intentionally the caller should have charges brought against her/him. This is to important to be falsely accusing someone or making up a story for whatever reason. "
