ISU men's basketball opens Valley season at Creighton
NORMAL — Osiris Eldridge won’t mind starting the Missouri Valley Conference basketball season at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb. Illinois State faces Creighton in its league opener on Dec. 29 in Omaha as the Redbirds released their Valley schedule Friday. Eldridge, who would earn the Valley Freshman of the Year award, tied ISU’s single-game record with eight 3-pointers last season en route to a season-high 28 points in the Redbirds’ 79-71 loss to Creighton on New Year’s Day at the Qwest Center. That game will be nationally televised as the first MVC Television Network telecast of the season by Fox Sports Net Midwest, Fox College Sports and Comcast SportsNet. ISU coach Tim Jankovich also announced the nonconference game originally scheduled on Dec. 16 at home against Illinois-Springfield has been moved to next season. Illinois-Springfield recently applied for NCAA Division II membership. The Redbirds already will play a regular season game this season against another Division II team, Missouri-St. Louis, in the regular-season opener on Nov. 11 at Redbird Arena. “Coach (Kevin) Gamble is a friend of mine and he thought, and I agreed, that he would rather play this game (against Illinois-Springfield) next year,” said Jankovich. “We will be glad to have them on our schedule next year in some capacity.” Jankovich didn’t know if ISU would schedule another game to replace Illinois-Springfield. It will be another New Year’s Day on the road for ISU. The Redbirds travel to Wichita State on Jan. 1 as they begin the Valley season with two road games for the first time since the 1992-93 season. ISU’s first league game at Redbird Arena comes against Southern Illinois, the probable league favorite, on Jan. 5. That starts a string of four straight home games. Four of ISU’s seven league games in February will be at home, including a Feb. 9 contest against arch-rival Bradley. The Redbirds also will be home on Feb. 24 for the ESPN BracketBusters against an opponent to be named later. ISU concludes the Valley regular season against Southern Illinois on March 1 in Carbondale. The Missouri Valley Tournament will be March 6-9 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
