U High runs over Olympia
STANFORD -- University High School Kurt Olson thought his team had first-game jitters Friday night.
Actually, it was first-quarter jitters.
The Pioneers came back from three turnovers in the first quarter and rushed for 538 yards in beating Olympia, 53-31, in a Corn Belt Conference game.
Three U High running backs rushed for over 100 yards. Will Brucker led the way with 187 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns.
Sean Hastings added 135 yards on five carries and two touchdowns. Caleb Katz gained 123 yards on 14 carries.
“Our offense put the defense in a hole with early turnovers, Olson said. “One nice thing was our kids kept fighting and moving the ball on the ground consistently. I think we wore them down in the second half.”
U High scored four touchdowns in under 4 minutes in the second quarter in route to a 27-19 halftime lead.
Olympia cut the gap to 27-25 midway through the third quarter on quarterback Aaron Frazier’s 2-yard touchdown run. But the Pioneers failed on the two-point conversion.
Hastings busted loose for a 62-yard touchdown run as the Pioneers scored the next four touchdowns to put the game away.
“We had a few missed tackles and got a little tired,” Olympia coach Matt Koeppel. “They ran the ball hard, and we did not tackle. That’s what it boiled down to.”
Frazier led the Olympia offense with 76 yards passing and 43 yards rushing. He threw two touchdown passes to Alex Freshour.
