Time runs out on Big Ten Network, Comcast

CHAMPAIGN -- Big Ten Network officials say the new TV network won’t be available to Comcast Cable subscribers when it starts broadcasting Aug. 30.

The new network and the cable company have squabbled for months over where viewers would find BTN and how much it would cost them.

The network, co-owned by the Big Ten conference and Fox Cable Networks, wants to be a basic cable channel for Comcast subscribers, while Comcast wants BTN to be part of a sports-channels package that subscribers pay more to see. According to Comcast, the network also wants the cable company to pay it $1.10 per subscriber.

“The fact is that Comcast is unwilling to negotiate with us, and it is now clear that it’s highly unlikely any agreement will be achieved prior to launch,” Fox’s Bob Thompson said in a news release.

Comcast says it’s willing to talk, but says the network is demanding too much.

“I do know that we have talked and that we’re willing to talk,” said Rich Ruggiero, an Illinois-based Comcast spokesman. “At the end of the day we do want to offer the network.”

" I think the Big Ten Network should be on extended basic from Comcast without an extra fee! If I don't like to see nature and science shows, I still have to pay for them because they are on the extended basic programing, so why should the Big Ten Network be any different? It should be on extended basic and those who don't want to watch, don't have to, just like those who don't like nature shows don't have to watch them either! "

" The Big Ten Network is available to Dish customers on channel 439 and overflow channels: 440, 441, 442, and 443. I am an existing customer and they just showed up on my guide. No extra cost! "

" So now the baseball games and the NFL pre-season games will be able to go on without these Big Ten Network interviews wasting my time in the middle of the games. I have enough useless basic channels and dont need another. "

" I'm sure the cable rates are going to go up again though we haven't seen any real improvements in cable programming in about 20 years! "

" Too bad Comcast (and other cable/satellite companies) don't switch to ala carte packaging. Allow the customers to pick and choose the channels they want. Make it to where on top of the local channels (NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, CW, MNTV) and public access, charge something like 40.00 dollars a month for 40 channels and allow a choice. Now, channels like HBO, Cinemax, Showtime and HD Packages, leave those as a package deal since you have to voluntarily choose to have them. "
