Signs to mark fatal DUI crash sites
SPRINGFIELD -- Small blue signs may begin appearing along Illinois roadways in an effort to discourage people from drinking and driving. Gov. Rod Blagojevich Friday signed legislation allowing families of victims killed in drunk-driving crashes to apply to put signs reading "Please Don't Drink and Drive" at or near the crash sites "Tina's Law," as it's called, is named after Tina Ball, an Illinois Department of Transportation worker who was killed by a drunk driver while standing in a construction zone. Ball's family pushed for the law, after their makeshift marker by the road was pulled up. Now, signs memorializing victims will hopefully serve as stark notices to drivers about the dangers of driving drunk, said state Rep. Susana Mendoza, the Chicago Democrat who sponsored the plan. "It really kind of hits home," she said. Families will have to apply to IDOT for a sign. The law takes effect at the beginning of next year, and signs will be available to families of victims killed after Jan. 1. 2003. In the meantime, drivers facing first-time convictions of DUI in 2009 will have to get ignition locks on their cars. An ignition interlock requires the driver to take a breath test to show they haven't been drinking before the car will start. The interlock costs about $150 to install, and costs about $70 per month to rent, according to a spokeswoman for Secretary of State Jesse White. Depending on their situation, people convicted of DUI would have to have the interlock for either six or 12 months. Blagojevich signed the law Friday. It takes effect in 2009. Now, only repeat offenders are forced to install interlocks, but White says 83 percent of DUI convictions go to first-timers. ''This is a new and innovative approach to deal with a very serious highway safety issue,'' White said. |
