U High runs over Olympia 53-31
STANFORD -- University High School coach Kurt Olson thought his team experienced first-game jitters Friday night. Actually, it was only first-quarter jitters. | Photo gallery The Pioneers recovered from three turnovers in the first quarter and rushed for a staggering 538 yards in beating Olympia, 53-31, in a Corn Belt Conference shootout. Three U High backs gained more than 100 yards. Will Brucker led the way with 187 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns. Sean Hastings added 135 yards on five carries with two touchdowns. Caleb Katz gained 123 yards on 14 carries, scored one touchdown and kicked five extra points. U High had eight plays of 25 or more yards. “Our offense put the defense in a hole with early turnovers,” Olson said. “One nice thing was our kids kept fighting and moving the ball on the ground consistently. I think we wore them down in the second half.” Even Olson was taken aback by the Pioneers’ final rushing numbers. “I jokingly said to someone I would like to rush for 300 yards tonight,” said Olson. “I haven’t seen 500 yards rushing around here in a long time. Our line did an outstanding job and our running backs ran hard. Up front we have all five linemen return, and you can definitely tell the difference.” U High scored four touchdowns in a four-minute span early in the second quarter to grab a 27-19 halftime lead. Olympia cut the gap to 27-25 early in the third quarter on quarterback Aaron Frazier’s 2-yard touchdown run. But the Spartans failed to tie the game on the two-point conversion. Hastings busted loose for a 62-yard touchdown run as the Pioneers scored the next four touchdowns to put the game away. Sophomore quarterback T.J. Smith completed only one pass in the game, but it was a 2-yard TD lob to tight end Luke Harbers that pushed the Pioneers over the 50-point mark for the first time since a 57-14 victory over Central Catholic in 2003. “We had a few missed tackles and got a little tired,” said Olympia coach Matt Koeppel as the Spartans lost their 25th straight game dating back to 2004. “They ran the ball hard, and we did not tackle. That’s what it boiled down to.” Frazier led the Olympia offense with 76 yards passing and 43 yards rushing. He threw touchdown passes of 4 and 37 yards to Alex Freshour and also rushed for two scores. Payton McVey was the Spartans’ leading rusher with 70 yards on nine carries, all in the second half. “I told our kids our goal is to get better and better,” said Koeppel. “If you look at the game against U High from last year, we’re getting better. They came out and beat us 35-0 last year. It’s day by day and step by step for us.” Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports. |
