Saints blank Eureka for Moews' 100th career win
EUREKA -- Not even six turnovers could slow the Central Catholic High School football team’s opening night express. The Saints overcame their offensive miscues with a stingy defense to defeat Eureka, 26-0, Friday at McCollum Field and win its season opener for the 29th straight year. “We had a lot of first-game mistakes. One thing I was really disappointed with was all the turnovers. We’ve got to get those cleared up,” said Central Catholic coach Bobby Moews, who won his 100th career game. “Our defense played very good. We kept them in front of us and didn’t give them any big plays.” Tailback Ryan Waldron rushed for 127 yards on 21 carries and ran for touchdowns of 1 and 31 yards for the Saints. Waldron’s 1-yard touchdown run came with 33 seconds left in the first quarter. Michael Fenger’s 42-yard field goal gave the Saints a 10-0 lead. Waldron broke a tackle at the 24-yard line on his way to the 31-yard score. Fenger, who had a 45-yard field goal attempt carom off the left upright, added a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter. Ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, the Saints’ final touchdown came on a 4-yard pass from Adam Rebholz to Javier Safford. Central Catholic limited Eureka to a net of minus 19 yards rushing. Using a new shotgun, spread offense, Hornets quarterbacks Sam Durley and Brian Schrock combined to complete 13 of 36 passes for 112 yards. “We did a good job of tackling, we had good line penetration and kept their quarterback kind of wrapped up the second half,” said Saints’ linebacker David Murray. “We had some big stops.” Eureka got interceptions from Ray Wilcox, Chad Pyles, Jordan Crowe and Wes Schmidgall. “Our defense played an outstanding game,” Hornets coach Kurt Barth said. “I don’t know their total turnovers, but we created a lot with what we did defensively. We played aggressive. The kids executed the game plan to the best of their abilities.” Rebholz was 3 of 12 passing for 32 yards. Pat McNeil added 76 yards on the ground for the Saints. “There were a lot of positives,” said Moews, “but we’ve got a lot of things to work on.” Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports. |
