Third Day, Jars of Clay to play at Coliseum

BLOOMINGTON -- The latest in a series of firsts for the U.S. Coliseum this fall is coming the venue's way.

Marking the first Christian rock concert for the Coliseum will be a Dec. 7 twin bill sporting two long-running, award-winning bands, Third Day and Jars of Clay.

Per the seasonal timeframe, the mini-tour (only 12 dates) is being billed "The Christmas Offerings Tour."

Though ticket prices for the 7:30 p.m. have been set -- $22 and $35 -- no ticket release date has been announced. They will be available through regular Coliseum box office channels, including (866) 891-9992 and www.uscellularcoliseum.com.

Other firsts for the venue this fall: its first comedy show (Don Rickles on Sept. 28, followed by NBC's Last Comic Standing Tour Oct. 14) and its first modern rock band concert (the Oct. 2 Breaking Benjamin/Three Days Grace show).

Upping the ante for the first Christian rock show is the fact that both long-running bands have deep ties to the Pantagraph area.

Third Day's guitarist, Brad Avery, grew up in Washington and graduated from Washington Community High School in 1989. His brother, Grant, lives in Bloomington.

Meanwhile, Jars of Clay's Steve Mason hails from Decatur. And the band's backing bass player, Aaron Sands, is a native of Towanda and a 1993 Normal Community High School graduate.

When Jars of Clay last performed in town, for a 1995 Second Presbyterian Church concert, Sands had put his bass guitar down and was administrating JOC's Blood: Water Mission, an outreach project in Africa dedicated to building clean water wells in areas ravaged by AIDS and poverty.

Part of the proceeds from the "Christmas Offerings Tour" also will go to that project. Fans will also be encouraged to donate at the concerts.

"I think our fans, and fans of Jars of Clay, are very giving people, and have expressed interest in joining us in giving to those who are in need during the holidays," Third Day's Tai Anderson said in a press release announcing the tour.

" Jars members have spoken in interviews since the 90's that they did not have a christian agenda in their music, and they disliked "christian propaganda bands" as much as anyone... but people lump them into it as if their music can not stand on its own... it has to carry the entire christian genre on its back... stupid really. Listen to their new record Good Monsters... then comment! "

" If you like these bands great. If you are a christian great! If you are not god still loves you no matter what! Non Christians quit bashing on this board! One day we all will die and have to stand in front of god. Either he will say good Job well done my son or he will say be gone I never new you! Just remember that people. God loves us all and wants all of us to go to heaven..... But that is your choice and god gave us free will! "

" I love how when God is brought up it brings up all the anger and emotion. Jesus said that "they will hate you more than they hat me." yet more proof that the bible is true... I can't wiat for this concert! I hope that one of you anti- Christian posters could show up and see what it is like...If you prayed about it I'm sure that we could find a way to get you there...I would seriously even get a few of you in. Just to help out. Be safe. "

" God loves strait people AND gay people. You must be hanging around Christians who don't follow Christ. He loves everyone....even you! And if you choose (because you ARE choosing, God wants no puppets) to pass on Him because people do bad things that claim to be Christians, then so be it. That is evidence of close mindedness and pure ignorance to pass on something that will give you the most joy you could ever imagine. I hope your blinders fall off some day and you can see how much you are missing. "

" He's watching is he?? Is he standing next to the Tooth Fairy?? You've seen him?? Or talked to him?? Let's talk about close minded, you Christians can all look in the mirror. "Love everyone, yet God hates gays." "Love everyone and let the preachers sexually abuse our kids". I'll pass on your Christian values. "

" Like I said, until you come to know a real relationship with Jesus Christ, you'll never understand us, and all the mean spirited words you can say will never change my mind. I never did believe in the tooth fairy, or Santa Claus, or the Easter Bunny. But I do know that the Holy Spirit inspired words of scripture are just as true today as they were when they were written 2000 years ago. I hope someday you will find that out, as well. "

" Perhaps you have never heard of Third Day because you don't listen to Christian music...? Jars of Clay had a couple cross-over secular hits, but their appeal in the Christian sector has been much more widespread. Anyone who listens to and enjoys Christian music knows these are big names! I'm looking forward to this concert! "

Illya wrote on Aug 24, 2007 10:17 AM:

" These are both GREAT bands. The music is rock but the message is love. You can bring children of all ages to this concert. For those of you that prefer a different message - well, wait for a different venue. I predict this show will sell out. "

Jars of Clay wrote on Aug 24, 2007 9:39 AM:

" is a good band, period. Christian or not. They had a couple hits back in the day on secular radio stations, and have been really popular with the christian music stations throughout all the years. Not all of their songs are all about God or Jesus, some are just about normal human issues, just like secular music. They are very musically talented. "

" If you don't like Christian music, then why bother taking your time to post about it? Just ignore it and get along with it. Also, Jars of Clay and Third Day are pretty good bands (whether you like "Christian" music or not). I actually worked at DQ in Normal with Brad Avery's sister Jenna many years ago and I graduated from and now work at the college Jars of Clay met at (Greenville College) "

" So what if you don't like their message and won't be buying a ticket? Who cares about your beliefs, likes and dislikes, or whether you attend any particular event? You have, though, given a fine confirmation of what's going on around us today: "For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power." Thanks for proving the accuracy of the Bible, anyway, even if your expressed opinions are otherwise pointless. "

" RE: Since you love contempory Christian music, I think you will enjoy this. I will be taking my 13 and 15 year olds. They have listened to both groups for several years. To: Great just great. Glad you won't be buying a ticket; save your money for your rock concerts. I don't remember ever hearing that the Coliseum was built for sports and rock concerts only (which they have had plenty of). Hopefully they bring in more Christian artists to provide people with a variety of choices. "

" And they wonder why this place is losing millions of dollars a year. Jars of Clay had one hit song back in 1995. I was in high school then and I still wouldn't pay more than $5 to see them perform. Never heard of Third Day. "

Eric H. wrote on Aug 24, 2007 12:09 AM:

" Grant moved to Normal. And to "Local," both of these bands have a huge number of really good songs. I think both can appeal to a wide age range. Third Day can make the building shake, but they also do well on the slower / more reflective songs. Their singer's voice is very good and well suited to both. Jars in my view is a little harder to pinpoint musically; well, I guess lyrically, too. "

To: Local wrote on Aug 23, 2007 11:57 PM:

" Both of these bands are cornerstones of the Christian music scene and I would say that young and old will love the concert. The album to start on for Jars would be their first one, self titled Jars of Clay, even though they are all good. As for Third Day get any of their albums they are all pretty good. "

Local wrote on Aug 23, 2007 9:52 PM:

" more Christian propaganda maybe the band has some talent. However I do not agree with their message, therefore I will not be buying a ticket. I would like to see some more rock shows smaller tours are fine. The GreenDay show in Peoria in a couple years back was a great show. This is a joke. Fundamentalist propaganda is not a rock show is is a Christian message advertised as a rock band. We have had a couple of good shows with a some real rock bands but we need many many more. Come BN crank it up a notch or 10. "
