Third Day, Jars of Clay to play at Coliseum
BLOOMINGTON -- The latest in a series of firsts for the U.S. Coliseum this fall is coming the venue's way. Marking the first Christian rock concert for the Coliseum will be a Dec. 7 twin bill sporting two long-running, award-winning bands, Third Day and Jars of Clay. Per the seasonal timeframe, the mini-tour (only 12 dates) is being billed "The Christmas Offerings Tour." Though ticket prices for the 7:30 p.m. have been set -- $22 and $35 -- no ticket release date has been announced. They will be available through regular Coliseum box office channels, including (866) 891-9992 and www.uscellularcoliseum.com. Other firsts for the venue this fall: its first comedy show (Don Rickles on Sept. 28, followed by NBC's Last Comic Standing Tour Oct. 14) and its first modern rock band concert (the Oct. 2 Breaking Benjamin/Three Days Grace show). Upping the ante for the first Christian rock show is the fact that both long-running bands have deep ties to the Pantagraph area. Third Day's guitarist, Brad Avery, grew up in Washington and graduated from Washington Community High School in 1989. His brother, Grant, lives in Bloomington. Meanwhile, Jars of Clay's Steve Mason hails from Decatur. And the band's backing bass player, Aaron Sands, is a native of Towanda and a 1993 Normal Community High School graduate. When Jars of Clay last performed in town, for a 1995 Second Presbyterian Church concert, Sands had put his bass guitar down and was administrating JOC's Blood: Water Mission, an outreach project in Africa dedicated to building clean water wells in areas ravaged by AIDS and poverty. Part of the proceeds from the "Christmas Offerings Tour" also will go to that project. Fans will also be encouraged to donate at the concerts. "I think our fans, and fans of Jars of Clay, are very giving people, and have expressed interest in joining us in giving to those who are in need during the holidays," Third Day's Tai Anderson said in a press release announcing the tour. |
