Sam talks about taking over as the yellow Wiggle
It’s not exactly like there suddenly being a new Beatle, but it’s close: Late last year, a new Yellow Wiggle joined the popular Australian kiddie group, replacing founding member Greg Page, who retired because of chronic illness. Sam Moran, 29, a one-time opera singer, performed in Dallas-Fort Worth for the first time as an official Wiggle during two shows. He took time out from their U.S. tour to answer a few questions: 1. How did you try out to be a Wiggle? I’ve been Greg’s understudy for the last four years, so whenever Greg was sick, I would go on for him. When he decided it was better to leave the group, the other Wiggles asked me to join. 2. Every Wiggle is known for something (Jeff, the purple one, is always falling asleep on stage; Greg did magic tricks). What will you be known for? Well, who we are on stage is just a caricature of who we are. Greg really is into magic. Jeff really does fall asleep quite a lot. So, for me, I tend to lose things, so maybe the children will have to help me find things during the show. 3. Do the Wiggles have groupies? We do! We have some fans that travel around to our shows, and fans that chat on our message boards. Sometimes they bring cans of fruit salad for Anthony (the Blue Wiggle who likes to eat) or pillows for Jeff. They’re really very sweet. 4. How have fans accepted having a new Wiggle? Anthony and Murray (the Red Wiggle), with their background in early childhood education, have felt that if you’re honest and explain what’s going on to children, they’re much more accepting of change, because, think about it, their entire life is change. They thought it would work better to introduce me as Sam rather than just try to pretend I’m Greg. And I think it has worked out. (c) 2007, Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
