Suspect who reportedly shot gun not in house after standoff
BLOOMINGTON -- Police stormed an apartment on the city’s near west side early Sunday after a nearly six-hour standoff, but a suspect who reportedly fired his gun near a crowd was not in the building. The 29-year-old man allegedly fired the shots after a group of people tried to break up an outside altercation between him and a woman just about 10:20 p.m. Saturday, said Bloomington police spokesman Duane Moss. No one was injured, he said. Police believed the man then went alone into the apartment at 408 N. Lee St., Moss said. Police blocked off Lee Street between Market and Monroe after responding to the scene before 11 p.m., Moss said. Monroe from Roosevelt Avenue to Lee was also closed as dozens of neighbors flocked to the sidewalks to see what was going on. Police asked residents on the east side of closed-off Lee Street to leave their homes, Moss said. After initial reports that the suspect was inside, police unsucessfully tried to communicate with him. After 4 a.m., police used a flash bang device and later tear gas, both with no response, Moss said. Bloomington police’s emergency response unit then entered the building and found no one, Moss said. No one was in custody late Sunday, and the case is under investigation, police said. |
