Intercity girls golf preview: U High back for more
University High School girls golf coach Cal Hubbard might have the easiest gig in the state. “My job is to get them to the tee on time and keep them hydrated,” Hubbard said. Hubbard was joking, but the fact is the Pioneers are heavy favorites to win a second straight Class AA state title and third consecutive state crown overall. U High returns the four counting scorers from last year’s team that posted a 14-shot victory over Hinsdale Central in the state finals: the senior quartet of Kaitlyn Wampler, Chelsea Harris, Cheryl Liang and Janelle Galloway. Wampler finished fifth individually at state, Liang tied for seventh, Harris was 14th and Galloway placed 23rd. The seniors also played on U High’s state runner-up team as freshmen before their back-to-back title runs. They will be joined by another letterwinner, sophomore Jenna Wampler (Kaitlyn’s sister), and talented freshman Lauren English. English finished second this summer in the Illinois Junior Girls State Amateur. The Pioneers already have proven they’re worthy of the hype by firing a school-record 293 in the Alton Marquette Tournament. “That’s one of the lowest scores I’ve ever heard of,” Hubbard said. “The good thing is we have six kids whose score can all count.” Normal Community coach Addie Ince complimented the Pioneers on several fronts. “They’re phenomenal,” Ince said. “Being a local team and always having to compete against them only makes us better. And they are extremely nice girls. It would be different if you were getting beat by a team that wasn’t very nice.” Living up to the lofty expectations might be U High’s biggest challenge. “I think there’s pressure on them every time they draw it back,” Hubbard said. “They have a target on them like anybody else that has been successful, and I think one of the hardest things to do in sports is repeat anything. “The good thing is these kids have the ability to do it. And it’s fun to be around them.” U High isn’t the only returning state qualifier from the Intercity. Central Catholic returns five of the top six players from last year’s sixth-place Class A State Tournament squad. “Our goal is to get back to state again and do better than sixth,” said Central Catholic coach Mary Jo Bell. “Everybody has worked hard over the summer and everybody is improved. I’m very optimistic.” Intercity capsulesBloomington Coach: Tom Waterson 2006: Sixth in Big 12 Returning starters: Seniors – Sarah Galloway, Tami Cleinmark; Juniors – Jenna Apple, Mary McCubbins; Sophomore – Annie Myers. FYI: The Purple Raiders should be much improved with promising freshman Alexa Tyler joining a veteran lineup. Central Catholic Coach: Mary Jo Bell 2006: Sixth in Class A state tournament Returning starters: Juniors – Tabby Bell, Katie Crawford, Ashley Schoop; Sophomores – Jordan Weth, Madalon Wieting. FYI: With last year’s team returning nearly intact, the Saints are poised to make another state tournament run. Normal Community Coach: Addie Ince 2006: Big 12 champions, sectional qualifier Returning starters: Seniors – Brittany Boon, Dani Hopkins; Junior – Allison Schultz. FYI: Boon, a four-year varsity starter, and Schultz head a senior-dominated lineup for the four-time defending Big 12 Conference champs. Normal West Coach: Zack Gilbert 2006: Fourth in Big 12 Returning starters: Junior – Alanna Harris; Sophomores – Kaitlin Reid, Kelli Miller, Kelly Farina. FYI: Freshman Rachel Clark will bolster an already-youthful lineup that should improve as the season progresses. University High Coach: Cal Hubbard 2006: Class AA state champions Returning starters: Seniors – Kaitlyn Wampler, Chelsea Harris, Janelle Galloway, Cheryl Liang. FYI: The Pioneers are prohibitive favorites to defend their Class AA state title and claim their third straight state crown overall with the addition of standout freshman Lauren English.
