Titan freshman basketball player shelved until January
BLOOMINGTON — Illinois Wesleyan freshman forward Dan Schouten will be sidelined until January after recent shoulder surgery. “Dan played through the injury his entire senior year. He was playing this summer and re-aggravated it,” IWU basketball coach Ron Rose said. “The doctor recommended surgery and he’ll be out until the new year. It’s a good thing to get it over with at this point and move on with his college basketball career.” Schouten is a 6-foot-5 product of Downers Grove South High School. According to Rose, Titans Brian Nussbaum, Andrew Gilmore and Sean Dwyer continue to progress in their rehabilitations. Nussbaum, who has had multiple shoulder surgeries and has been limited to three games over the past two seasons, has been cleared to participate when practice begins Oct. 15. “He was cleared a month and a half ago, but we have not allowed him to play (pickup games),” Rose said. “We want to give his shoulder every opportunity to strengthen.” Gilmore, who averaged 11.4 points despite knee pain last season, is recovering from surgery to relieve tendinitis in both knees. “Andrew has had steady improvement,” said Rose. “He’s still unable to scrimmage. But he can shoot every other day. We’re going to be conservative with him. He’s just now able to run.” Dwyer played in IWU’s first two games last season before suffering a season-ending broken foot. While rehabilitating that injury, Dwyer broke his other foot. The second fracture has healed, but Dwyer underwent a bone graft for the first injury that had not healed properly. “He’s just now out of the (protective) boot, but he can’t work out at this point,” Rose said. “We’ll be cautious. We want to wait until it’s fully healed. He’s questionable to be ready for the start of practice.” Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports. |
