Author’s writings poetry in motion
MANSFIELD — Roger Huisinga wanted to make sure his kids knew how much he loved them. “There were some things I wanted to get across to my kids in case I wasn’t around forever,” Huisinga said. So he wrote a poem called, “To My Children,” which expressed how he felt about his daughter and son, who are now 14 and 17 years old respectively. The poem, which was later published in his first book, “I Don’t Know Jack,” sparked Huisinga’s interest in writing. Now, he’s releasing a second book of poems he authored called “Forty Acres of Thought, Poems from Around the Bend.” At 46 years old, Huisinga seems an unlikely poet. The farmer and Monticello Ag Center employee grew up south of DeLand. He went on to study agricultural economics at the University of Illinois. Although his mother has always written poetry, Huisinga says he didn’t plan on following in her footsteps. “I was always too busy doing something or going someplace (to write),” he said. But a couple of years ago, a health scare changed all that. For Huisinga, poetry became an outlet “to get stuff off my chest.” He describes “I Don’t Know Jack,” as more serious, covering subject matter like politics, abuse and war. With “Forty Acres of Thought,” Huisinga wanted to publish something with a more humorous side. Several of the poems in his books were inspired by real-life stories, which were discovered by talking to different people in his life. “If you tell me a story about some experience, whether it was funny or you learned something, I can take your story and put it to verse,” he said. Huisinga says he wants to offer a service to others who would like a poem written for a special occasion. Huisinga’s books, which also are available on audio CD, are available at Mayhaven Publishing in Mahomet and Zeimer’s Gallery in Monticello. |
