Two dead in motorcycle-car crash in Woodford

LOW POINT -- A man and woman were killed and another woman was injured in a head-on collision Monday involving a car and a motorcycle in northwestern Woodford County.

David M. Barajas, 46, and his passenger, Jessica J. McEvoy, 26, both of Henry, died after their motorcycle collided with a car driven by Mindy L. Bezely, 26, of Lacon, said Woodford County Coroner Tim Ruestman. The crash happened just after noon on Illinois 26 north of Banta Road in Woodford County, about seven miles west of Low Point .

Autopsies are scheduled for Tuesday and toxicology tests are scheduled for all people involved, the coroner said.

Barajas was driving south when his motorcycle crossed into the northbound lane and hit the car head-on.

An Illinois State Police spokesman says the motorcycle passenger’s body was thrown into a nearby cornfield.

Trooper Tony Halsey said: "Being a motorcycle, high rate of speed, head-on collision, and no helmets, the bodies tend to go airborne and they were ejected off of the motorcycle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene."

The driver of the car was flown to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center with serious injuries.

Woodford County and Illinois State Police are investigating.

" I happened to come across this article in the archives and figured I would throw in my opinion. Im a Henry, IL resident and knew ALL of the victims in this accident. As far as I thought nothing had been yet releases of the accident accept that the motorcyclist was going close to 100 mph. There had been calls made just a small time before the accident from other motorists driving along that rd for his reckless driving. I only knew of the car victim but heard there were marks showing that her vehicle had not crossed into opposite lane. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those involved. "

" this is six months after crash of my son david barajas. i finally went to crash site & picked up what was left of his motorcycle. bits & pieces, david was not drinking, was not on drugs & always went the speed limit, never tried to pass on a curve. i'm sorry what happened to car driver, very sorry, but she was in no condition to drive, breaking up with boyfreind & on cell phone, she crossed yellow line. david always wore his helmet, but that day for some reason left it home. ask any motorcyclist no helmet will save you if its your time. nothing will. i will miss him very much, i have a hard time dealing with this, even now, but i am getting peace. God bless all motorcyclists, & keep on watching out for the cars. "

" David was my brother, no they were not wearing helments, there wer NO drugs in my brothers system at all and they after looking at the skid marks, no one is sure that he crossed the line. David loved his bike he loved the freedom of the open road as he rode. David will be missed by everyone who touched his life. "

" My what a nasty little attitude you have there. And to make assumptions as to what the cycle driver may or may not have injested is not only insensitive but irresponsible. The factors that cycle drivers deal with are a little broader than you 4 wheelers. Granted he moved into the lane of oncoming traffic, but it could have been anyting from a bug in the eye to a gust of wind. We are not asking you for any special considerations (note the key word "special") just to share the road as you would with any other vehicle. With your attitude I would not anticipate that you share much of anything, or play nice with others. So wipe your nose, drink your cocoa, play with your Ken doll, take your nap, and leave the newspapers to the grown-ups! "

Ride at your own risk. I'm not taking any special care for some idiot driving a cycle. It's your choice. Not my responsibility to keep you safe!!! "

" I have read the article, where do you see that they needed dental records to identify the bodies because they were so mangled.....that is so disrespectful to them. My thoughts and prayers with all familes involved. I know many bikers and they have always been very respectful....and yes some do and some don't wear helmets. "

" Everytime I see a motorcycle I pray that they have a safe ride. I wish more riders would wear helmets. I'm not a big fan of motorcycles..and I don't have anything against people riding them. My only concern is when people but their kids on the back of them..with little or no protection. It scares me to see a child on the back of one. Including my own daughter whose father choses to take a risk and but her on the back of one. Kids need to be in carseats..they shouldn't be passengers on the back of motorcycles. "

" People please...as the article states the bodies were so badly mangled that dental records are going to be needed. A helmet can/may save your head in some circumstances, but do absolutely nothing to protect any organ from the ear down! "

" I have been a Harley motorcyle owner for the past 30+ yrs and acknowledge the danger of riding and agree with the importance of wearing helmets. I am a professional and have 3 college degrees. I am not proud of the fact I do ride at times without a helmet. Get off the stereotyping of motorcyclists. More and more baby boomers are driving the sales of motorcycles. I am always treated great by all that ride no matter the income or where they live. My sympathy goes out to the families. "

Helmets wrote on Aug 28, 2007 9:20 AM:

" Helmets probably wouldn't have saved these folks, but they are very important when you are in slower speed accidents such as in town or if you slip on some gravel in a curve. They don't limit your sight if you know how to turn your head and use your mirrors..and they don't affect your hearing in any way that would affect your safety...I actually use ear plugs with my helmet and it's amazing how they block wind noise, but let you hear things like those loud pipes and horns..plus you're actually preventing hearing loss.... "

" Persionally I am a woman and my husband and I have a motorcycle and we enjoy going out riding . I do not know why "To the State" made a comment like that about women!!! There is nothing wrong with a woman being on a motorcycle when the "Women" are the one who are more cautious. I am my husbands second set of eyes and ears when we are riding because I watch for other vechicles while we are riding. As far as other vechicles all they are looking for is another car and not a motorcycle!!! Has anyone seen the signs in town "Start Seeing Motercycles"? As far as helmets I agree with The Joker when you are airboure a helmet would not have done any good. But that is my opinion!! And everyone has one . I feel sorry for the family of these people and my prayes and thought are with them! "

" that two lives are lost. Yes, they should of had a helmet on, but some people think it can never happen to them, but it does. We always wore a helmet and went everywhere on our bike. I don't think a helmet would of saved these two after hitting a car head on. At 50 mph that is a 100 mph impact so how could you survive? So at least give yourself a 50-50 chance and wear a helmet. My sympathies to all families concerned. "

" This has been one of the worst seasons in terms of motorcycle-related deaths I can remember. My thoughts go to the families. People need to start seeing motorcycles, and riders need to wear helmets. I had an accident in April and spent two weeks in BroMenn. I would have died had it not been for my helmet. I don't like the idea of a helmet law, but maybe they should be mandated - motorcycle companies should have to include one helmet per seat with each new bike sold. A basic DOT helmet only costs about $100, which isn't much on a $5000 bike, let alone a $25k Harley. "

Ban Motorcycles? wrote on Aug 28, 2007 12:48 AM:

" They did that with 3 wheeled ATVs and I still own two of them. In over 20 years of riding them I never have hurt myself other than a few burns on my leg because I didn't wear proper Clothing. Always wore a helmet though when I was on it. If you act responsible when riding and are not reckless your just as safe as anything else. If you drive a car and speed and crash you take the chance of being killed also. "

CHOICE wrote on Aug 27, 2007 9:51 PM:

" Who's to say a helmet would of saved a life in this case. I bet it would NOT have mattered either way.. Helmets block some vision and limits hearing so some accidents can be due to a helmet..I do NOT wear a helmet when I ride as a passenger.. And to how can the state: A MAN WAS THE DRIVER OF THE MOTORCYCLE! All of the articles I have read about motorcyle accidents have always been MEN driving not a woman..So that was a terrible comment for you to make. "

" How can the state make us wear seatbelts while still letting people smoke and die of cancer, drink alcohol, ride bicycles that could get hit by cars or swim in water that can drown you?!? Because its America, and we have the freedom to chose. Do what you want, but I'll keep riding and enjoying life. Some of you will take no chances and lead a boring life that - by the way, still ends in death. I don't condone speeding with or without a helmet on - but you don't have any business making a comment like that. "

" What is a "helment"? If a motorcycle rider wants to go without a helmet, they should be able to, just like if a car driver wants to go without a seatbelt, they should be able to as well. Do away with the seatbelt law, but put something in place saying that if a seatbelt isn't worn in an accident, then there cannot be a lawsuit for injuries or death. "

Those bodies would have become airborne with or without helmets. Nothing was going to keep these two anchored to the ground. Helmets would have done absolutely no good. As an avid rider, my heart goes out to the family of these two. And prayers go out to the driver of the other vehicle for a speedy recovery. "
