Waltz's penalty kick gives Heartland men a road win
By Pantagraph staff
BELLEVILLE — Matt Waltz’s penalty kick in the 59th minute gave the Heartland Community College men’s soccer team an historic first win with a 2-1 victory over Southwestern Illinois College.
Andrew Thomas, a midfielder from Normal Community, scored the Hawks’ first goal on an assist from Waltz in the 42nd minute. Southwestern countered seven minutes later when Alex Agne scored an unassisted goal.
After Waltz gave the Hawks the lead on a penalty kick, Heartland goaltender Jairon Cross, a University High product, preserved the win with several spectacular saves. Crosson turned away five Southwestern scoring attempts while the Hawks put seven shots on the Blue Storm net.
“I’m very proud of the way this team has come together in just four weeks,” said Heartland coach Bodo Fritzen. “We played a hard-fought match against a very strong opponent and came out on top.”
Heartland will open its home schedule at 4 p.m. Wednesday against Danville Community College. All Hawks home matches will be played at the Bloomington’s Sale Barn Fields.
