5 years ago (2002): High school boys soccer coaches say the Sept. 5 and 7 Intercity Tournament is more of a tossup than any salad concocted on the Food Channel. Two-time defending champion University High has won three of the last four titles.
15 years ago (1992): The population of Bloomington and Normal is growing. Maybe that explains this year’s turnout for Intercity high school girls swimming. Normal Community has a record 40 swimmers and Bloomington has a 33-girl group. Only enrollment-controlled University High has stayed level with 16.
25 years ago (1957): A leadoff triple by Mark Burris and an RBI single by Mike Lucas were key hits in a two-run sixth inning that gave the Hearts of Bloomington a 3-1 victory over the Southern Illinois Merchants in the ASA Class AA State Fast Pitch Tournament at O’Neil Park.
50 years ago (1957): Laesch Dairy completed a perfect season in the Town and Country League at O’Neil Park with 6-1 and 10-0 softball victories over Carlock behind the pitching of Willis Laesch and Roy Woods. The decisions gave Laesch Dairy a 17-0 record and the undisputed league crown.
