Intercity girls cross country team previews
2007 intercity girls cross country previews Bloomington Coach: John Szabo, 26th year 2006: 4th in Intercity, 5th in Big 12 Returnees from top seven: Sr. – Ashley Verplank, Ashley Szabo (13:14.6 in 3,200), Ashley Salzman, Allie Barringer; Jr. – Janelle Poisel, Ashley Short. FYI: Only Verplank and Szabo advanced from the regional last year. Senior Steph Sorensen is a soccer player out for the first time. Quote: “I think we could be better than we were last year as a team,” John Szabo said. “Having Ashley (Verplank) up front always helps. Adding Steph (Sorensen) to that mix gives us depth.” Normal Community Coach: Tom Patten, 23rd year 2006: 2nd in Intercity, 1st in Big 12, 27th in Class AA state Returnees from top seven: Sr. – Erika Hanson, Alyson Meyer; Jr. – Mara Weaver, Sarah Roberts, Amy Ziegler. FYI: Weaver, Roberts, Meyer and Ziegler placed between seventh and 16th in last year’s Intercity Meet. Hanson, who has run 57.98 in the 400, is another state cross country veteran, but she sat out the track season with a knee injury. Freshman Raquel Gibson placed 21st in the junior high state meet. Quote: “We hope to try to defend our conference title,” Patten said. Normal West Coach: Den Patten, 13th year 2006: 1st in Intercity, 4th in Big 12, 12th in Class AA sectional Returnees from top seven: Sr. – Kayla Braffet, Sarah Marrochello; Jr. – Kirsten Boesen. FYI: Club soccer commitments have kept the Wildcats’ roster from being at full strength in some meets in recent years. The team’s Division I soccer recruits are Braffet (South Dakota State) and Stephanie Horvath (Elon). Marrochello, who ran a 2:22.9 800 in 2006, sat out last track season with an injury. Quote: “I believe we have eight or 10 who can compete for top-seven positions,” Patten said. University High Coach: Lester Hampton, 19th year 2006: 3rd in Intercity, 3rd in Corn Belt, 19th in Class AA sectional Returnees from top seven: Sr. – Katie Erdman, Sara Idelman; Jr. – Wen Yang (12:53.32 in 3,200), Colleen Campbell; So. – Rachel Witte, Kara Butorac (13:33.9 in 3,200). FYI: Yang, Erdman, Witte, Campbell and Idelman placed between 12th and 23rd in the Corn Belt. Yang was a team-best fifth in the Intercity, but Witte ended the year as the team’s top runner, placing 75th in the sectional. They will compete in Class 2A. Freshman Emily Clay, who is also a star pole vaulter, is the sister of former U High all-stater Rebekah Clay. Quote: “I think the experience factor will go a long way toward helping this group,” said Coach Lester Hampton, who rates Mahomet-Seymour the league favorite. Central Catholic Coach: Tom Engelhorn, 6th year 2006: 5th in Intercity, 5th in Corn Belt, 6th in Class A regional Returnees from top seven: Sr. – Michelle Mueller, Brittany Brady; Jr. – Cassidy O’Brien (13:32.44 in 3,200), Riley Paul; So. – Kelly Curran, Katie Crawford. FYI: A soccer injury has Brady sidelined indefinitely. Engelhorn expects the freshmen, who helped Epiphany place 10th in the junior high state meet, to be the “backbone” of his Class 2A team. Freshman Emily Beoletto won junior high state track titles in the 100 and 200. Quote: “This large group is coming in with a cross country kind of mindset,” Engelhorn said. “It’s really fun to watch them work hard and start to build the team nucleus.” Cornerstone Christian Academy Coach: Michele Larsen, 1st year Team member: Fr. – Katie Wilhelm. FYI: Wilhelm is single-handedly getting her high school’s girls cross country program started. Quote: “She has a great attitude and a superior work ethic,” Larsen said.
