Indoor football to resurface in Peoria
By Pantagraph staff
Peoria is getting back into the indoor-football business next year when the Peoria Pirates resurface in the af2. A press conference has been scheduled for Wednesday to announce the return of the organization to Peoria.
The Pirates played in three arena football leagues from 1999 to 2006, winning titles in 2002 in the af2, a league that sends many of its players to the increasingly popular Arena Football League. The Pirates ceased operations for the 2007 season after attendance dwindled in 2006.
The team will be owned by former Dell executive Doug MacGregor, the Peoria Journal Star has reported.
The newspaper also reported that UIF members Lexington and Omaha are considering switching to the af2. That would leave the UIF, the circuit in which the Bloomington Extreme play, with nine teams.
