Student from Illinois hurt in knife attack

A freshman was slashed in the throat on the University of Colorado campus Monday in Boulder, Colo., by an incoherent man who then began stabbing himself, school officials said.

The student, from Illinois, underwent surgery and was “holding his own,’’ university spokesman Bronson Hilliard said. The suspect, a man in his 50s, was arrested and hospitalized with serious stab wounds, the school said.

Neither man’s name or hometown was released. The student was conscious after the attack and had spoken to family members by phone, Hilliard said.

The university said the man drove to the campus, walked to a terrace outside the student center and then showed a knife while talking or yelling incoherently.

He grabbed the student from behind and cut his throat, the school said. The student broke free.

A Boulder city police officer and a sheriff’s deputy who were nearby rushed the scene, and campus officers arrived shortly after that, Hilliard said.

When officers ordered the man to drop the knife, he began stabbing himself, so police stunned him with a Taser and arrested him, the school said.

Monday was the first day of school, and the university used its new emergency text-messaging service to alert students to the attack, Hilliard said.

" Oh, but you are wrong, little lady. Practically the worst training in Illinois, the minimal amount of accountability and job responsibilities, little pay to attract good candidates, and a media showboat for a chief. Nope, these are toy kops at best. Hire 80 year old guys to check the locks, that's all these guys really do. "

" What do you have against ISU Police? Last time I checked, a police officer is a police officer, no matter if it is one from a university, city, county, or state. "

Sounds very much like ISU wrote on Aug 28, 2007 7:47 AM:

" A local officer, and a County officer were able to respond quicker, before a kampus kop was able to get there. Just like ISU, the kampus kop was probaby hiding somewhere so that they woudln't have to put themselves at risk, while the real law enforcement professionals took care of business. Hire "Andy Frain" guards, they'd be cheaper. "

" Terrible tragedy, and I hope the kid pulls through with no major problems. I can not wait though to find out who wants to spend $1 million to attempt to prevent this from happening again. "
