Police still seeking man in confrontation

BLOOMINGTON -- Police are looking for the man they believe fired at a group of others in a confrontation late Saturday, prompting officers to surround a nearby apartment for nearly six hours.

Bloomington police spokesman Duane Moss said officers have the name of the man they believe fired the shots, and “It’s just a matter of finding him.”

Police surrounded an apartment in the 400 block of North Lee Street until about 4 a.m. Sunday, when officers raided the home and discovered nobody was inside.

The incident began when a group of people tried to intervene in a confrontation between a man and a woman about 10:20 p.m., Moss said. Area residents told police the man fired several shots from a handgun before fleeing into the apartment, he said.

No one was injured by the gunfire. Moss said he didn’t know Monday afternoon what the bullets hit or if the man fired at others, fired into the air or fired at the ground.

Police tried to contact the man through crisis negotiators once they arrived at the home, Moss said. Emergency response unit officers went inside after negotiators weren’t able to get any answer.

" I think everyone should consider that they responded as fast as they could. They can't just appear as soon as it happens. BPD did a good job on making sure the people that lived around there were safe as well as there own safety. WAY TO GO BPD!!! "

" I can tell you one reason the cops were not in this area, it takes three squad cars to make one traffic stop. Your long winded tirade makes it sound like the BPD are busier than the police in a real city are, and that is hardly the case. I have no chlldren running away and my wife passed a couple of years ago. That in mind the calls you spoke of certainly do not pertain to me but what does, is the fact I drive down the streets of Bloomington and I see two and three police units have one car pulled over with only one occupant. I would not think much of this if the one occupant were to be a strapping man or an intimidating figure, but when the lone occupant is a 60 year old woman on a cane, I find that repulsive. I have witnessed in the last 6 months numerous times where more than two and often 3 police cars have a single car with one occupant pullled over to the curb. This is overkill and it is also understandable why criminals get away with as much as they do here in town. "

To: Where Were The Cops??? wrote on Aug 28, 2007 6:20 PM:

" Where were the cops? BPD was probably busy with numerous calls that they handle every evening. Calls such as breaking up the fights you and your wife continuously have, babysitting your children at the police dept after your "little Johnny" decided to steal something from a store or better yet, trying to car jack some poor lady at the grocery store, or complaining of the loud music coming from down the street, the near by bar, or better yet calling in about the barking dog, or subj walking down the street "possibly" smoking a joint, and of course my favorite call, "little Susie" is out of control and mommy and daddy can't handle her anymore. These officers go from call to call to call, only to receive criticism from the public on a daily basis. How often do you hear anyone saying "thank you for finding my runaway child", or "thank you for getting the college students to turn down the music"??? These folks enter a thankless job. I just want to say thank you BPD for responding in a timely manner!!! "

" I happen to work for the county sheriff's department. Yes, I passed on the opportunity to join the ERU. They are going to get someone killed someday. Unfortunately it will be the wrong one. I want nothing to do with that. "

" We are talking about an intersection that is as central as you can get. I would like to know at that time where were the BPD? This police department has to go into the Guinnes Book of World Records for being at the wrong place at the wrong time for everything. I would think that on a Saturday night at that time there would be a parol almost every 5 minutes in that area. Afterall we have crackhouses on ?Washington St, Jefferson St, and Monroe St, and all the downtown bars as well, where were the BPD? Another case of them not being able to cover the downtown. Now that in mind why is there even a question as to why people do not want to go downtown? DUH? "

" Witnesses said the man ran into the apartment. The police have to take this into account. It is possible that he ran into the apartment, then ran out the back door as police arrived or prior too. You guys weren't there, and weren't shot at, so shut you mouths. "

" 90% of the intelligent individuals whom write their responses to events like this one show their true skills. Theirs skills of ignorance along with their ability to remain close minded. The parents among the 90% also probably have obese children whom cant take responsibility for their own actions. A trait bred down through the past generation. I wish more individuals understood that there is more to the world then outside their own. OPEN YOUR MINDS and stop being self absorbed !!! "

" If the BPD had a great record for apprehending individuals who are perpetrating the drug deals, crime and assaults, there probably wouldn't BE all the criticism. However, we all know this is not the case and just maybe the citizens are getting sick and tired of 'not knowing'. In case you haven't noticed, it's not safe out there. "

" I see you believe the police training "sucks", I wonder.....where did you get your psychic training or ability to see through walls to determine whether people are inside a building or not. The article did say witnesses told police the suspect was inside. With this awesome ability (knowing the unknown) you must clearly possess, you could be an assett not only to police, but the whole world. I bet if you leave your contact information, the police would call you next time something like this happens. "

" No name is being released, because they don't have any shell casings/recovered bullets(revolver?), and therefore have no real proof that he fired a gun at all. It could have been fireworks, but they just don't know. They also have no real witnesses other than people who 'heard' it. They (coppers) are downright poor at doing anything beyond writing tickets. I used to watch them at their 'training' facility, and If I had been a psycho, I could've picked 'em all off with a pellett gun. "

" Come on, "Just Wondering," you don't really expect the police to seek citizen involvement, do you? The people in this little burg are just tin-foil-hat wearing conspiracy theorists who couldn't tell the difference between a criminal and a saint on a clear day. You'd have a wild-west shootout in the streets before sunset on the best of days. Get real! "Citizen involvement" ... sheesshh ... give me a break. "
