Message of teen’s rally: Win in Iraq
BLOOMINGTON -- When high school student Josh Carrigan saw news accounts in March of protests against the war in Iraq, he decided he had to do something to show support for the war effort. So Carrigan, now a Normal Community High School senior, contacted his friend Guy Hanna, an electronics technician and local Republican Party activist, and sketched out some ideas on a napkin at a Twin City restaurant a short time later. The end result is a rally planned for 7 p.m. Thurssday at Miller Park to support troops at home and aboard and to tell people victory in Iraq and Afghanistan is vital to the future of the U.S. “To win this war, we should support our troops,” Carrigan said. “We didn’t start the war — it was started by the terrorists,” Carrigan said. “I think we’re turning the tide. I think we’re actually close to victory.” Rally for Victory 700 will feature: McLean County Sheriff Mike Emery, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran; Rod Worth, an Army veteran who served in Vietnam; Adam Kinzinger, a former County Board member now serving in the U.S. Air Force; Judge Robert Freitag, a member of the U.S. Army Reserve who served in Iraq; and state Rep. Dan Brady, R-Bloomington. The “700” in the title refers to the time of the event, Hanna said. Retired McLean County Sheriff Steve Brienen, a U.S. Air Force veteran, will emcee the event. The Fifty American Flags Living Memorial will be on display. Carrigan said reducing troop levels in Iraq is a mistake because the military needs to be there for stability so the Iraqi government can do its job. “We’re never safe from terrorists,” he said, adding that continuing the wars keeps most of the terrorists out of the U.S. Carrigan and Hanna two met in August 2006 at the McLean County Fair, where Hanna, who is a Republican precinct committeeman, was at the Republican Party tent. They struck up a conversation, and Carrigan later helped with campaigning last fall. “He’s an outstanding young man — got a head on his shoulders,” said Hanna, who served as Carrigan’s mentor through the rally planning. “It was his ideas.” While Hanna credited Carrigan’s ideas, the teenager credited Hanna too. “Without him, I couldn’t have done it alone,” Carrigan said. Carrigan plans to attend Heartland Community College and then major in political science at the University of Illinois at Springfield. He said he feels a going into a political career is the best way for him to support the troops. Rally time What: Rally for Victory 700, an event to support U.S. troops at home and abroad When: 7 p.m. Thursday Where: Miller Park Bandstand, 1020 S. Morris Ave., Bloomington |
