Pontiac incident hits home with area schools

STANFORD -- A police officer arrived at Olympia High-Middle School Tuesday afternoon, just hours after six guns were found and three students arrested at Pontiac Township High School.

Olympia Superintendent Brad Hutchison said the officer would be at the school complex Wednesday and as needed. Plans already were in the works for a resource officer to be at the school every day once details were worked out with McLean County sheriff’s police.

The situation in Pontiac resonates with Olympia because that district had a lockdown last October after a message threatened gun violence, Hutchison said.

Improvements were made to school security cameras and a new security entrance system was installed over the summer, Hutchison said. School crisis plans were being reviewed in a faculty meeting after the Pontiac situation.

“No one has come forth with any anxiety concerns we’re aware of,” he said.

Bloomington District 87 also has a wide variety of security measures and procedures in place and the staff has just gotten fresh reminders with the start of the school year, said Superintendent Robert Nielsen.

But nothing takes the place of people being the eyes and ears in the field, he said. “Our best defense is to have students and parents sharing rumors with us,” he said. Letting officials know immediately is vital so they can investigate immediately and decide the merits of the information.

Nielsen noted he read media accounts about the Pontiac incident that said a student told a school official about the guns. “It confirms what I’ve been saying,” he said.

Districts 87 looks at what happens in school districts across the country to see what they can learn, he said. But with Pontiac being one county away, Nielsen said, “It certainly brings it home. It can happen anywhere.”

" I am very thankful that Brad Hutchison is a man who understands people will criticize some of the things he does but is willing to roll it off the cuff because he knows that something very minor may make the differance. One Police officer present can make a differance. The new cameras can make a differance. Something wasn't done just to say something was done. That Officer was most likely on duty, a large part of his duties are to be ready for similiar incidents. I will bet if you ask him he would tell you it was a good call. Any Officer will tell you they prefer to be present to prevent than to handle the aftermath. Besides whoever commented that this was an over-reaction would have been the first to criticize if there would have been no reaction. "

" I graduated from PC 5+ years ago. I was an athlete when I was in high school, so I have been to both these schools and know people that go to these schools. It may have been only writing on the wall in the bathroom at Olympia. But think about this...if it wouldn't have been taken seriously, who knows what could have come about. These kinds of threats need to be taken seriously. I remember my freshman year of high school. A kid had a "hit list" in his locker and was expelled from PC. I think our school acted in very good sense because this teen was not in the right state of mind. Every kind of threat like this should DEFINITELY be taken seriously regardless of how extreme it is!!! "

" You people are not looking at a wide picture. You say "it happened an hour away." That's not that far. Olympia and Pontiac play each other in sporting events and everything else. A threat is a threat. Whether it is carried out or not, it still should be taken seriously and precautions should be put in place. Some of you parents have the idea of still being a child's mentality that "it could never happen here or to me." IT CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE! I'm sure Columbine as well as Virginia Tech thought the same thing. The First point is to keep these kids safe!!!! "

" It is an over reaction when you call for police on standby when there is no threat in your school. You just want to be able to say you did something. Yes lets close the gate the horse is a mile down the road. Security at any of these schools is a joke. And parents despite all the talk do not want true security. Because that would violate little Johnny's rights and be inconvient tommorrow. "

" Yes this might of happened an hour away but wouldn't you like to know that your child is safe even if this happen six hours or twelve hours aways, by the way I am a parent from Pontiac with a sophmor in school and I want my child safe and prepared for this type of thing even if it happened in China!!! God Bless mine, yours and all!!! I never thought it would happen here!!! "

" Leave it to Olympia to call in the police because an incident that happened at a school an hour away. Also why do they block the restrooms at lunch time? Because someone wrote on the walls last year? "

" Our best defense is to have students and parents sharing rumors with us,” This is horse hockey! I was a victim of one of these rumors, I was accused of writing a hit list and had allegedly made polans to commit a school shooting. Following these rumors I was suspended, then expelled, and taken to trial. After a year, GOD only knows how much in attorney fees and a lifetime of scarring I was acquited. Great idea, listening to rumors. "

" Was the person or persons that wrote the threat ever found and were they punished? I have a son in the high school and two kids in Danvers. AS parents and tax payors we have a right to know what is being done to protect the kids and stop this type of thing. WHen I was in the 6th grade at an area school in the 80's a boy brought a gun to school. This is not a new problem. Over time it has gotten more media attention. Kids also are more bold. They don't seem to be as scared of things as we did when we were kids. "
