Salvation Army running short on food

BLOOMINGTON — The kids are back in school, but a long summer of eating at home has led to a shortage of meat and pasta at The Salvation Army. Another Twin City agency is helping victims of out-of-state flooding.

“We ran out of meat on Monday and are now out of pasta,” said Kim Anderson, community relations and development director of The Salvation Army of McLean County. She’d like the public’s help.

The Salvation Army does not get its next monthly delivery of federal commodities until the second week of next month, Anderson said.

Besides having had more mouths to feed in the summer, families also were affected by high utility costs, she said.

The Salvation Army typically distributes whole frozen chickens but, Anderson said, “Our freezer is pretty much empty.”

Besides meat and pasta, Anderson said needs include cereal, macaroni and cheese, boxed meals, laundry and dish soap, diapers, tissues, toilet paper, deodorant, shampoo and soap.

“We have been able to provide some canned goods, like green beans and corn,” she said.

Donations can be made weekdays at the Corps Community Center, 611 W. Washington St. The Food Pantry, which serves people in need, is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and serves about 500 people monthly.

Midwest Food Bank

Bloomington-based Midwest Food Bank has sent a semi-load of disaster relief items to flood victims in Finley, Ohio, earlier this week.

The Food Bank also provided help in Galesburg, where many families and businesses lost power due to high winds during a recent storm.

" These people need to get jobs...two or three jobs....it's the American way. We have a war on terror to fund and these people wanting free handouts for food and such are taking money away from the war effort. Any good Republican knows that welfare and handouts is not the American way. Get a job, another job, and go to church! "

" Maybe the salvation army could sell those silly uniforms on Ebay and make some money. I'm sure someone would sue them for a halloween costume. "

" i do agree w/you.but lets be honest have you ever seen the food items most people receiving link buy.i have been behind them in line at walmart on the first of the month when their link goes into effect.they are buying expensive steaks and lots of pre-made food iems.please dont say this isnt true i as i have seen it with my owns eyes.my uncle works at walmart and says its like this every month.if these people would consider buying cheaper cuts of meat and more make from scratch items they could stretch their link to last alot longer.i think there should be guidelines that they have to follow for the products they are allowed to buy.most of the people on link eat better then those of us who dont recieve link.but lets face it.there is no way to stop this.and many people are getting link in several different states.dont believe me,look to the interstate every month around the first and around the 15-16th of each month. " I volunteer at a food pantry. We see many people who could feed their family each month on their Link card. Unfortunately they must not know how to manage their food budget so they end up needing to come to food pantries. This is not a criticism of people who receive assistance and still come to food pantries...it's just a fact. If we could somehow teach these families how to manage their Link card there would be more food left over at pantries for those who don't get enough assistance or no assistance at all. I've wanted to implement something like this, it's been on my heart and mind for a long time. I wouldn't really know how to go about it, and would it really work? Would people be accepting of help in budgeting their food money? Any ideas? "

" The more handouts you give with no requirements or responsibility for receiving the "help", the more you attract homeless people from Chicago using and abusing the system. I'm glad the Midwest Food Bank helps out in natural disasters, not in promoting more homeless people to flock to cities that have the best handouts. "

" to "not to sound" - do you realize how many places the midwest food bank helps? They do help locally - to all of McLean County and other areas. I guess my question to you is how much have you given locally to help those that live around you? "
