ISU quarterback on watch list for Payton Award
NORMAL — As a returning first-team all-Gateway Conference quarterback, Illinois State senior Luke Drone was already a player to watch in the Football Championship Subdivision for the coming season.
That became official on Wednesday when Drone was among 16 players chosen to the Sports Network’s watch list for the Walter Payton Award.
The Payton Award is given by the Sports Network to the top player in FCS. Updates and revisions to the list will be made in October and November before the final ballot is distributed to voters.
Drone passed for 2,961 yards and 21 touchdowns as a junior. He needs 2,350 yards and 20 touchdowns this season to become ISU’s career leader in both categories.
Also, Drone’s career passing efficiency rating of 147.2 is nearly 20 points ahead of the second-place mark in school history.
Other Gateway Conference players on the Payton watch list are Northern Iowa quarterback Eric Sanders and Western Illinois running back Herb Donaldson.
