Out Loud: NCHS golfer tees off on Caddyshack
Admittedly, Normal Community golfer Ryan Smoot’s personality is “a little bit in the middle.” The senior, who also plays tennis, tends to be shy around strangers but outgoing with friends and family. Yet, when it comes to his future, Smoot is nowhere near the middle as he intends to major in engineering next fall at either the University of Illinois or SIU-Edwardsville. Before Smoot posed for a team picture at Ironwood Golf Course, the Pantagraph caught up with a young man who dreams of “getting a good job and starting a family.” Q: Which character would most resemble you in the movie “Caddyshack?” A: “Probably Bill Murray (Carl Spackler). He’s hilarious, and I like to think I have a good sense of humor.” Q: Do you think you could beat Tiger Woods in a round of mini golf? A: “Probably not. He probably has a lot tougher mental game than I do.” Q: Who would be your dream date to the prom? A: “That’s a hard one. Probably Jessica Simpson or someone like that — someone famous. I would get respect from some people.” Q: Do you think you could beat Happy Gilmore in a round of golf? A: “Yes. I would just get him angry.” Q: Who is a better golfer — Happy Gilmore or Ty Webb? A: “I’ll go with Happy Gilmore. He can outhit anyone.” Q: What category on “Jeopardy!” would you dominate? A: “Probably anything in history. I like to study it, and I watch the History Channel a fair share.” Q: Which is tougher — carrying a golf bag for 18 holes or sitting through a full day of class? A: “Sitting through a full day of classes easily. It’s just boring. I love golf, and I would pick that over anything in the world.” Q: If you were in “Caddyshack” and you were Bill Murray, what would you do to kill the gopher? A: “I would probably do the same thing he did — blow up everything.” Q: Do you think a mulligan should be allowed in competitive golf? A: “No. If you screw up, you screw up. You shouldn’t have any redos. There are no redos in life.” Q: Would you ever wear knickers in a round of golf? A: “Can’t say I would. I’m more of a fan of slacks and normal golf wear.” Q: What is the first thing you like to do once you’re finished with a round of golf? A: “Sit in the clubhouse and drink a Dr Pepper. It’s the best soft drink there is.” Q: Is it necessary when you’re playing golf for the crowd to be absolutely quiet? A: “Not necessarily. I block everything out. I try and do my best to just pretend it’s me out there.” Q: Who would you love to caddy for in “Caddyshack?” A: “The guy who shot the great round in the rain (Bishop Bickering). I love golfing in the rain, and he just seemed like an interesting character.” Q: Which sport is tougher mentally — golf or tennis? A: “Golf. It’s longer and there’s a lot more to think about.” Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports. |
