High school notebook: Tri-Valley's Ludwig picks C. Michigan

Tri-Valley High School senior setter Catherine Ludwig is a proven decision maker with hands skilled enough to execute her decisions.

Her coaches say those are among the reasons Central Michigan University offered her a full scholarship, which she has committed to accept.

The 5-foot-11 right-hander will sign a national letter of intent with the Mount Pleasant, Mich.-based Chippewas in November.

“Her setting skills are solid,” said Illini Elite coach Michelle Robinson, who watched Ludwig earn AAU national tournament MVP honors after guiding her team to the national title. “She makes good decisions on the floor.”

Robinson credits Ludwig’s leadership skills for helping her club team triumph.

“She tends to lead by example,” Robinson said. “She is quiet and fairly reserved. At the same time, she has a way of developing close relationships with people she plays with. She is very sweet.”

Ludwig considers herself a people person.

“I think I know how to encourage the people I play with,” she said. “I get to know them and get them playing their best.”

Ludwig was an all-Heart of Illinois Conference first-team selection last year when she averaged 8.6 assists per game to help the Vikings go 15-14. She also earned Pantagraph All-Area honorable mention. She has played five years of club volleyball.

“They wanted someone who can step in and compete for playing time,” said Illini Elite director Andy Erins. “They recognize the fact she’s got really good hands and a lot of stuff to build on.”

Ludwig, who has a 4.0 grade point average, plans to major in pre-physical therapy. She joins a program which was picked to finish third in the Mid-American Conference after going 17-13 last season. The Chippewas are coached by Erik Olson.

“I was looking for academics at first,” said Ludwig, who also considered Cincinnati, Evansville, Drake, Grand Valley and Washington (Mo.). “But I also wanted a competitive volleyball program at the same time.”

Central Michigan will have an upperclassman setter when Ludwig arrives so she may red-shirt her freshman year.

Tri-Valley coach Jeff Huebner said Ludwig has many assets.

“She blocks very well and is especially good at reading the hitters,” he said. “She has the most fundamentally sound hands in the area. She knows volleyball. She knows where people are supposed to be. She’s almost like an assistant coach.”

If the shoe fits …

In 39 years as the public address announcer for the Bloomington High School football team, Larry Connolly has seen plenty of excitement at Fred Carlton Field. This past Friday night, he did something that he hadn’t done in nearly four decades on the job.

At halftime during BHS’ 28-14 season-opening victory over Decatur MacArthur, Connolly was given a sandal by a fan who found it in the stands. Upon receiving the footwear, Connolly’s face turned almost white with the realization that he must announce a lost shoe to the crowd.

While telling the crowd the shoe was lost, Connolly exclaimed this was the first time in 39 years he announced a missing shoe to the Purple Raider fans. Less than two minutes later, the shoe was recovered by its owner, forcing Connolly to announce the sandal was recovered, much to the delight of the crowd.

Defending champions go 7-1

Out of eight schools that were state champions last year, seven came away with victories in week one. Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin, which won Class 5A last year, was the only team to lose its opening game. The Cyclones fell to Lombard Montini 34-24.

Tuscola, the defending champions in Class 1A, carded the largest victory after it defeated Sullivan 46-0. All told, the margin of victory was by an average of 24.5 points with three teams coming away with shutouts.

Dewing it right at Olympia

Pork chop sandwiches at Olympia High School home football games have become legend for their mouthwatering taste. An Olympia official confirmed last week the scrumptious entrees are marinated in Mountain Dew prior to cooking.

University High head coach Kurt Olson, whose team won 53-31 at Stanford on Friday night, said it has become tradition for U High line coach Todd Miller to buy the coaching staff pork chop sandwiches at Olympia. Miller purchased 10 this year.

“Typically, he sneaks away and gets them and we eat them before we go through the pre-game while the kids are getting dressed,” Olson said.

Randy Kindred, Randy Sharer and Daniel Makarewicz contributed to this report.
