Burk, Christofilakos likely to miss Evansville game
BLOOMINGTON -- Starting quarterback Dusty Burk will sit out Saturday’s 7:05 p.m. regular-season finale for the Extreme (7-7) at Evansville (5-9) because of a back injury that developed in last week’s game, possibly from compensating for an abdominal injury. Burk will be replaced by Steve LaFalce, who has completed 22 of 43 passes for 221 yards in five games. “We’re going to find out if he can help us in these playoffs and down the road,” Schmitz said. “He had a real good third quarter in the second game of the year out at Ohio Valley. Then when we started him here (April 14), he got the wide eyes. “He should be over that by now. He’s no longer a rookie. He’s had 18 weeks of practice.” Burk may not be 100 percent for the playoff opener, which Schmitz guesses will be July 21 against Rock River at Rockford. “He’s got to be able to play,” Schmitz said. “We need him to beat Rockford. We think we can beat anybody in this league.” Higgins within range Doug Higgins, who has one field goal and four PAT kicks this year, will likely fill in this week for kicker Peter Christofilakos, who is nursing a groin injury. Schmitz believes Higgins can shine at Evansville’s Roberts Stadium, which has the shortest field in the UIF at 40 yards with 4-yard end zones. “It’s really small,” Schmitz said. “It’s really not even a legal indoor facility. “It’s an interesting place to play. Last year, we won over there because of Pete. He kicked one with his back up against the back wall, all the way. You can kick the whole length of the field, where here you can’t.” |
