Extreme handles Evansville; starts playoffs on the road

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Their starting quarterback and kicker were both in street clothes.

They trailed 13-0 after allowing two touchdowns on their first two defensive series.

Early in the second half, they found out that the road to the United Indoor Football title would include no home games.

Still, there was no quit in the Bloomington Extreme.

Behind quarterback Steve LaFalce’s arm and the legs of kicker Doug Higgins, the Extreme finished on a high note following a 48-31 victory over the Evansville Bluecats in the UIF regular-season finale at Roberts Stadium on Saturday night.

“We played hard,” Extreme coach Ted Schmitz said. “Defensively, we played hard once we settled in. … We came in short-handed, but they didn’t think we were short-handed and they played hard.”

Lexington secured the Eastern Conference’s No. 3 seed with a 47-40 victory over Ohio Valley, relegating the Extreme to the fourth seed. Bloomington will play its first-round contest on the road against top-seeded Rock River on Saturday at the Metro Centre in Rockford.

The Extreme split its two meetings with Rock River, winning 54-47 on May 25 and falling 40-39 on June 16. Neither team won their home game.

Trailing 16-6 in the second quarter, the Extreme (8-7) kicked its offense into gear, scoring the 26 straight points. In that span, LaFalce completed 23- and 25-yard touchdown passes to Glenn Johnson and Reggie Gray respectively, while Rocky Harvey scored a one-yard touchdown run and Higgins kicked a field goal.

The defense, meanwhile, simply overmatched Evansville (5-10), blocking three field-goal attempts and intercepting BlueCat quarterback Brent Dearmon in the end zone. In the second and third quarters, Bloomington only allowed ten BlueCat points.

LaFalce, who was starting in place of Dusty Burk, finished with three passing touchdowns and one rushing.

After starting the game 2-of-7, LaFalce completed 8 of his final 12 passes to finish with 100 yards and one interception. He also rushed for a team-high 33 yards on nine carries.

Higgins, who played for Peter Christofilakos, kicked four field goals and connected on 4-of-5 PATs.

Rachman Crable blocked a field goal for a safety in the second quarter, while Quince Holman recovered a fumble and also blocked a field goal.

“I’m just really proud of these guys,” Schmitz said. “We won’t start celebrating … we’ve got work to do.”

Bloomington, which finished with 131 yards of total offense, has won two consecutive games and three of its last four after a three-game losing streak.

“I’ve like the way this team has played these last couple weeks,” Schmitz said.

" Congrats to the team and management for a tough win on the road with a short roster. Now, play tough next week, get a pass rush against Rock River and lets get an upset win. "
