Burk gets most votes among UIF Eastern all-stars
BLOOMINGTON -- The first United Indoor Football All-Star Game will feature four players from the host Bloomington Extreme. Extreme quarterback Dusty Burk, wide receiver James Walton, offensive lineman Chad Walker and defensive back Terrill Mayberry were part of the 25-man Eastern Conference roster announced Wednesday by the league. “I’m glad to have those guys, and I think we’ll have some alternates in there later on,” Extreme coach Ted Schmitz said. “Some guys (all-stars) won’t be able to show up.” The game will be held Aug. 18 at 7:05 p.m. at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in downtown Bloomington. Burk was the leading vote-getter in the Eastern Conference with 352 ahead of the 319 of Rock River quarterback Ben Sankey, who also made the team. Burk and Sankey will square off Saturday in the first round of the UIF playoffs as Bloomington travels to Rockford for a 7:05 p.m. game at the MetroCentre. “It’s nice. It’s not something you really spend a lot of time thinking about until after the season. We have bigger goals ahead,” Burk said. “But anytime you can play in front of our fans, it’s cool. We’ve had a lot of support all season long.” Burk has completed 184 of 300 passes for 2,093 yards and 40 touchdowns for a Bloomington team that leads the UIF in average attendance at 5,594. “Dusty had the most votes in the East, which was really nice and deservedly so,” said Schmitz. Walton leads the 8-7 Extreme with 66 receptions, 838 yards receiving and 19 touchdown catches. He is a former teammate of Burk at Truman State. “There is no other place you would rather play in this league than Bloomington,” Walton said. “They really care for us, and they really love this team. It’s been big for our playoff run.” Walker has been a force on the Extreme offensive line, while Mayberry leads the team with 83.5 tackle points and 17 pass breakups. Walker called the all-star berth special “especially where it’s played. We’ll have our hometown fans, and family won’t be too far away. It will be cool.” “Chad has come on to be an outstanding offensive lineman,” said Schmitz. “Terrill has had a lot of pass breakups. He’s learned to play the ball real well.” The Eastern Conference’s running backs are Muhammad Abdulqaadir of RiverCity and Lexington’s Rayshawn Askew. Joining Walton as receivers are Lawrence Bady of Rock River and Harry Lewis of Lexington. Other offensive linemen on the East squad are Barry Brueggeman of RiverCity, Rock River’s Craig Howard and Lexington’s Michael Madrazo. East all-star defensive linemen are Darius Jones and Anthony Harris of Rock River, RiverCity’s Terrell Washington and Evansville’s Deion Holts. The linebackers are Evansville’s John Winchester and Rock River’s Maurice Simpkins. Joining Mayberry in the East secondary are A.J. Bryant of Evansville, William Mulder and J.T. Haskins of Lexington and Rock River’s Blue Aldridge. The East kicker is Rock River’s Doug Daniel, the kick returner Hurtis Chinn of RiverCity and the special teams specialist Demetrius Wilbert of Ohio Valley. For the Western Conference, Sioux City linebacker Spetlar Tonga was the league’s top vote-getter with 554. More than 1,400 votes were received. Sioux Falls and Rock River paced all UIF teams with eight all-stars each. 2007 UIF ALL-STAR SELECTIONS:EASTERN CONFERENCE Quarterback Ben Sankey, Rock River Raptors Dusty Burk, Bloomington Extreme Running Back Muhammad Abdulqaadir, RiverCity Rage Rayshawn Askew, Lexington Horsemen Wide Receiver Lawrence Bady, Rock River Raptors Harry Lewis, Lexington Horsemen James Walton, Bloomington Extreme Offensive Linemen Barry Brueggeman, RiverCity Rage Craig Howard, Rock River Raptors Michael Madrazo, Lexington Horsemen Chad Walker, Bloomington Extreme Defensive Linemen Deion Holts, Evansville BlueCats Darius Jones, Rock River Raptors Anthony Harris, Rock River Raptors Terrell Washington, RiverCity Rage Linebackers Maurice Simpkins, Rock River Raptors John Winchester, Evansville BlueCats Defensive Backs AJ Bryant, Evansville BlueCats William Mulder, Lexington Horsemen Terrill Mayberry, Bloomington Extreme Blue Aldridge, Rock River Raptors J.T.
