UIF taking bids to host next Classic

BLOOMINGTON — United Indoor Football commissioner Dakota Crow said Saturday night the Casey’s All-Star Classic “will be open up for bid” next year.

After having the inaugural event at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum this week, league officials have already said other franchises have expressed interest in hosting in the future.

“We’ve got two or three teams wanting it,” Crow said.

Crow would not comment on which franchises or venues have contacted the league, but hopes the location will be decided early to make the event even better.

The first All-Star Classic was announced by the league in late May, giving Coliseum and league officials less than three months to coordinate the event.

“Knowing where one is in September or October will really help because season tickets can be sold with that, vouchers can be sold with that package,” Crow said.

BlueCats blues

Evansville BlueCats director of operations Rob Rexing said a number of factors led the UIF team to cease operations recently.

Evansville, which finished in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with a 5-10 record, averaged 1,916 fans for seven home dates at Roberts Stadium, one of the larger venues in the league with a capacity of 12,500.

Rexing said the lease for Roberts Stadium was either the highest or second highest in the league. The team did not profit from concessions or alcohol sales and was offered no incentive bonuses for the team or organization.

“I think it was a combination of ticket sales, sponsor support and, of course, the support of the city officials and the stadium,” Rexing said. “A lot of areas needed to improve and (the owners) didn’t see significant progress to justify continuing (operations).

“Hopefully in the future, things will improve and we can have indoor football back.”

Despite Evansville ceasing operations, the UIF will remain at 11 members with the Wichita Wild joining the league next season. Rexing is hopeful the BlueCats and their new owners will continue operations and remain in the UIF.

“It would make the most sense for the new owners to continue (the team) in United Indoor Football because that’s where the franchise is already licensed to play,” he said prior to the Casey’s All-Star Classic. “That would make the most sense, but again it would be up to the new ownership.”

" Wow, a league office employee stopped by. Thanks for visiting and trying to claim the extra two guys on the field were good. My wife wanted to leave at halftime. The high school bands were great, but the (lack of) organization in the whole evening drove us nuts. I complained to one of the Extreme staff, and he said, "hey, don't blame us, the league has kind of taken over everything." The opening introductions were terrible, too. Couldn't understand a word, and there was 3 or 4 or 7 guys coming out of the tunnel thing all at once...it was pretty bad. "

" I've been to every road venue the Extreme has played in, and don't move it is right. Sure, other places would be good hosts, but if you want it to be a showcase, keep it in Bloomington. Also, I liked the guys on the field hosting the events. They took some of the better promotions from around the league and did a great job hosting them. The Extreme promotions are generally pretty boring (except for the Kiss Cam). I liked seeing some of the other dance teams and mascots. I thought it was a great night! "

Conditions wrote on Aug 19, 2007 12:36 PM:

" I would agree that it needs to stay right here, but after talking to some of the Extreme staff last night after the game, there needs to be some conditions: 1. Let the Extreme staff run the show, the 45 minute halftime was awful. 2. Let the Extreme announcers do their job. Those two other guys that were brought in didn't need to be there. 3. Generally, the out of town guys need to just stay out of town. Other than that, enjoyable game, and after going on the road with the team twice (Rockford, Evansville), there's no place like the Coliseum. We have it much better than they do. "

" I've been through Bloomington - Have no probelm with it, but I have also been to several other places with UIF teams, and many would be great host sites, with wonderful people and plenty of hotels. I can't imagine ANY reason not to move it. But I appreciate the hometown support. "

don't move it wrote on Aug 19, 2007 12:39 AM:

" Dakota, keep the Classic in Bloomington. It's the nicest arena in the league, and it's the most centrally located. There are plenty of hotels for people to stay at, and you know you're going to get a good crowd. Maybe Rockford--but they only drew like 1800 people for a playoff game--or St. Louis, because they're both geographically in the middle. But Bloomington's arena is nicer than both and you'll get more fans. "
