Miller, Orr re-sign
BLOOMINGTON -- Veteran defenseman Sam Miller and rookie left winger Jamison Orr will return for the Bloomington PrairieThunder after re-signing with the team Wednesday. Miller, 26, joined the PrairieThunder midway through the season and played in the team’s final 41 games. The 6-foot, 205-pound defenseman had a goal and two assists while logging 116 minutes. "Sam is a fiery competitor and was one of our top defenders by the end of the year," said Bloomington coach Derek Booth "He’s not afraid to mix it up and he won’t back down from anyone." Miller has played in 225 games at the professional level. He began his pro career with Memphis in the Central Hockey League in 2001. He also played for Port Huron in the United Hockey League, along with New Mexico, Corpus Christi and Youngstown in the CHL. Orr, 20, will still qualify as a rookie in the International Hockey League this year after joining the PrairieThunder with three weeks remaining in the season. He played in 10 games and had three assists. "Jamison was a strong addition to the team at the end of the season," Booth said. "He has a lot of talent and toughness. We really wanted him to come back." The 6-3, 220-pound Orr -- whose older brother, Colton, plays for the New York Rangers -- spent most of last season with Melfort in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He scored nine goals with 17 assists for 16 points and had 214 minutes in penalties with Melfort. “It was awesome for my career to get the experience I got in Bloomington last year,” Orr said. “The fans were great and very supportive. Coach Booth helped me a lot with my game in the short time I was with the team. “I’m looking forward to having a big year because I know what to expect at that level. I know I need to get bigger and stronger, and that’s what I’ve been working on in the off-season.” Booth said he anticipates bringing 24 players to preseason training camp when it begins in early October. |
